It's just part of the long term grim-n-gritty fallout from the mid-80's. DC and Marvel have intentionally turned their universes into morally grey areas, with morally grey heroes and morally grey villains. Why do you need villains if the heroes are fighting each other all the time? There can be a place for that as long as a) it's logical, and b) isn't overdone. When Red Skull leads an Avengers team, I think I'd be quitting that book! I mean, Norman Osborn led an Avengers team.

In his ongoing book in the 90’s , Thanos repented and tries to do good for a planet he decimated.

[To the tune of "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?" by Paula Cole]
Do do doo Do do doo Do do doo Do do doo
Oh, you got it ready Wielding a block that's heavy Holding it right over the hero's head Not Batman or Human Torch Or idiots from Stormwatch Can get out of this deathtrap today
I will maintain the lair If you do all the kills
Where is my death ray gun? Where is my Gamma Gong? Where is my deathtrap ending? Where have all the villains gone?
Why don't you stay the evening? Post your ransom on the TV If they want their stupid hero freed Oh, I know your back hurts From smashing his face in the dirt You'll get them next time for sure, my sweet
I will ready lasers Just tell me when to kill
Where is my death ray gun? Where is my Gamma Gong? Where's my cliffhanger ending? Where have all the villains gone?
Yippee aw yippee yay Yippee aw yippee yay Yippee aw yippee yay Will you please kill someone today?
With karaoke for anyone who wants to sing along.

This ambiguity with regard to many characters that were once straightforward villains or heroes is one of the few things I like about the newer MU - in theory, at least: in practice, the details of how they implement these changes aren't always thought through very well, from what I've seen; and besides, there are so many other things I dislike that it isn't really enough to get me reading the new stories. But it isn't a bad idea in itself, to my mind.

What about {Name of current Marvel editor?} She worked on {Name of current Marvel book that was changed slightly from my childhood.} They obviously deserve jail time!
(For Halloween this year I am going as every comic book message board poster ever. How am I doing?)

(For Halloween this year I am going as every comic book message board poster ever. How am I doing?) Really? What sort of costume would a sweeping generalisation wear? I was wondering it Reptisaurus might possibly have posted his comment in the wrong thread, because skimming back through it I didn't see any posts complaining too harshly or criticising any individual editors or writers.
But I think what sometimes happens is that there's been so much of this kind of talk on comic book message boards in general, a lot of people read a kind of complaining tone and unspoken accusation into any comment that isn't 100% positive, whether it's there or not.
But I think we should be able to say we don't like something without everyone assuming that at the same time we're full of an arrested-adolescent venom and spite against some writer or editor for messing with our favourite toys. And just because you might not feel like swallowing the latest marketing bullshit from Marvel or whoever about some new project doesn't mean you're mentally throwing a childish tantrum.
Hmm, speaking of posting a comment in the wrong thread, maybe I should have put this in "There, I said it" , because it could be I'm misinterpreting the intent behind Reptisaurs's post.

Was just thinking today are there any true villains in Marvel Comics anymore? Define a "true" villain. Hey the Politics thread is closed! At Marvel, I suppose Fu Manchu never really turned into a good guy... except that he’s been retconned away into a non-entity. Are the Yellow Claw and the Mandarin still around? What about M.o.d.o.k.? Baron Strucker? Madam Hydra? Bullseye? Granted, most A-list villains are eventually allowed to reveal more depth than their initial role as just some hero’s nemesis would require (Dr. Doom, Galactus, Loki and the like)... but some villains still appear irredeemable. Not all of them are interesting, alas.

I think most of those are still around, though Yellow Claw and Mandarin are both death last time I checked.
I haven't seen Strucker since Secret Warriors, but he probably was a part of Secret Empire.
M.O.D.O.K. was part of the West Coast version of the Masters of Evil recently (together with Madame Masque, Graviton, Satanna, Lady Bullseye and the Eel).
Madame Hydra: Back to calling herself Viper I believe, she has been around in recent years, usually involved with Hydra.
Bullseye: was paralyzed for a while, but I think I saw him in a recent comic back as an assassin for hire.
But I'm joining in Confessor in the "define what is a true villain"-group.

I don't read comics that are new...are you saying Marvel comics are villain-less? Or are you saying there is no overarching bad guy that is a true threat? Has something happened in the comic world to Thanos, Kingpin, Green Goblin, Kang, Scorpion, Loki, Galactus, Venom, Carnage, Mandarin, MODOK, Abomination, Juggernaut, the Sentinels, Annihilus, Ultron, Bullseye, Sabretooth, etc. that I do no know about? If they are truly all gone and not used anymore, therein lies the reason I do not read current comics. The vast majority are Anti-Heroes now.. it's one of the big turnoffs I have for today's comics.
