Read the entire series series years and liked it.
Saw the pilot with my brother last night (Amazon Prime), who only has read The Walking Dead, and we both liked it.
Ellis' work translates amazingly well to the screen.
My girlfriend wants to see it too after we catch up on Swamp Thing.

We watched the whole 8 episodes. It was pretty good. I have not read the source material. Some spoiler-free commments...
Things I liked:
* They did a good job introducing new characters one at a time. This kept the narrative uncluttered, and everybody got their day in the sun.
* Good characterizations. By the end of the series, I had a good handle on the varied personalities of the Vought folks and The Boys.
* Good acting.
* Black Noir (heh!) was a fun mash-up of Snake-Eyes, Batman, and Nighthawk.
* The villain is not just a mustache-twirler, but an individual whose pathologies (and he has many) are shown to have reasonable foundation in his life experiences.
Things I didn't like:
* Oh, the plot holes. Like why there are supers running around NOT in Vought's training pipeline. Why Starlight was picked up off the street and immediately thrown into a job requiring both (1) tactical know-how and (2) P.R. briefing without any of that. I kept thinking, "Where is Beta Flight? Where is Gamma Flight?" We hear about a sidekick team. Surely there are others as well, including other corporations which like Vought are trying to capitalize (literally) on the Supers. None of them are in the Army already?
* A lot of the story elements that may be new to typical viewers are going to seem cliche to anyone who's read a lot of comics, and not just The Boys. It could be Squadron Supreme (Gruenwald or JMS), Rising Stars, Jupiter's Legacy, JSA: The Golden Age, etc.
* The season-ending plot twist was telegraphed sooooo far in advance that it was more a shoe waiting to drop than any sort of surprise.
* Obligatory "Evangelicals are evil phonies" episode. We get it, Hollywood hates us.

Two friends of mine who each loved the comics series think the tv show is great.
But I thought the preview looked awful and still don't feel motivated to even give it much of a look. There are too many shows out there that I know I want to see to spare time for stuff I'm iffy about right now.

I'm shocked this thread was buried away for over 2 years
Really enjoyed the first 2 seasons. I liked Ennis's comic series although I thought it ran a bit too long. The changes the TV show has made have been fine. I'd rather not have carbon copy live action adaptations as long as they are done thoughtfully
Just waiting for them to finish Season 3 which should conclude in a month before watching those

Just finished watching Season 3 of The Boys. Really enjoyed it, love it's in-your-face, black comedy style. I liked the original Garth Ennis books as well though i think it got stretched out for too long.

I really enjoyed it as well.. and funnily enough I think alot of the plot holes rberman mentioned get filled in. I haven't read the comic yet, but I definitely will at some point.. still deciding if I'm going to buy it or read on Hoopla.

In the comics one never understands why Super are famous, considering they do absolutely NOTHING. At least in the TV series sometimes they stop a bank robbery or similar.

I think in the comics that was probably deliberate on Ennis's part: as I see it, part of his concept for the series was, superhero comics are shite - i.e. "do absolutely nothing" - yet they're popular anyway. So how come?

I can see this approach working for a parody, but the problem is that the comic, aside from the super antics, is deadly serious. Sure, there is the classic black humor of Ennis, but otherwise the story is told in a similar-realistic way, between politics, corporations, black ops and the CIA. But EVERYONE believes that the super defend the Earth from alien invasions and nobody asks questions. And it's not like the WWE storylines, where people pretend to believe it. No, even Hugh, who even before his girlfriend's death had no particular love for the super, believed that their "deeds" were all true. This page for example (of course it's just an excuse so the heroes can go to Herogasm). Official statement in front of The Capitol in front of the Press no one is questioning it?!?! Really? All media are part of the conspiracy? It's a little too much. The tv show is more balanced.

Never read the comic, but I started watching the show this week, primarily because I love Supernatural (also done by Eric Kripke, and I want to see Jensen Ackles in a different role later on). Just finished Episode 5 of the first season, and have just one thing to say about it thus far:
Forking diabolical.
