One of the earliest Avengers I ever had was the original Wonder Man story, but I still have to go for the red suit. That short era of Wonder Man, The Beast, Ms. Marvel and The Falcon as members was great even if it was down to Gyrich.

Original, with Perez's redesign a close second, for me.
I don't like the safari jacket precisely because it doesn't look like a superhero costume: it seems out of place to me in a series like the Avengers that is all about superheroes and the colourful pageantry of the costumes is a big part of that.

Yep, I've said it before, and I'll say it again, that little mini-run of Avengers from # 181 to 202 is my personal favorite stretch of issues. Love the stories (except 200), love the art, & love the line-up(s).

It didn't hurt that he had George Perez and John Byrne for most of his run.

I'm a sucker for the sleek, sleeveless le rouge et le noir ensemble. Since there's only one vote per person permitted, I voted for the first one (with the gold wrist bands); the red banded version is a close second. Simon's got great biceps, he may as well show them off

Who doesn't like a safari jacket? That gets my vote.

Agreed--the jacket made him look like some rich guy who buys loud (in color) safari jackets to con people into believing he's some big game hunter, and that's as far from the look and tone of a superhero as one can get.

Also, I never liked the open eyes look. In one of the earlier appearances I read, I think it was MTIO #75 when the Avengers and the Thing are playing poker, Ben comments about him removing his "cheaters", and Simon says that his eyes tend to make people uncomfortable. Sure he could have stopped caring at some point but I thought it was an interesting detail of his character.

Yeah. I don't have a problem with the safari look in itself, but for that character in that series it doesn't work for me, just like those team jackets or windbreakers the Avengers wore at some point in the 80s or 90s (long after I had stopped following the series but I've seen it online).
But obviously it was a big hit with a lot of fans!

Oh, the Bob Harras bomber jacket era. Don't remind me!

The Safari jacket for sure. It's simple, functional, and distinctive. It makes sense for a Hollywood guy also.
