'60s highlights for me would be about the artists... Steve Ditko: Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Hawk & Dove and Captain Atom Jack Kirby: The Fantastic Four, Thor and those first few Avengers and The X-Men Speaking of Jack Kirby, his illustration of Spider-Man in The Avengers #3 is quite... different from how Steve Ditko illustrated him. Well, Kirby--like the majority of Silver and Bronze Age Marvel artists--was not suited to bring out the essence of the character. During the Silver Age, it would be no surprise about who was the greatest of all Spider-Man artists.

MLJ/Archie/Mighty decided to regularly publish superheroes again after they had stopped about 15 years earlier, but it's too bad they didn't quite catch on: You know what? When they were revived (again) in 1983 under the Red Circle imprint, initially, I thought It was less than spectacular (much like their runs from earlier decades), but in giving it a chance, I found it to be a brief breath of fresh air to the juggernauts that were the Big Two publishers (even as DC had already entered one of --or arguably its greatest creative periods). The Mighty Crusaders stories were not classics, but it was nice to read something from a superhero world that had its own identity and tone for the world created around it. Not for a second did I believe the characters could crossover with DC or Marvel, and that was one of the things that was so appealing.

The 60's was a time when I was too young for reading comics (born in 62) so most of my 60's reading was Marvel/DC reprints in the 70's or more recently the last few years in trade collections or back issue purchases.
Particular standouts and likes for me:
Flash under Infantino. Hawkman under Kubert and Murphy Anderson. Doom Patrol. Metamorpho. Legion of Super-Heroes. DC War comics. Sea Devils. Avengers. Fantastic Four. Spider-Man. Iron Man. Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Gold Key Star Trek. Charlton War comics.

I find that it's a lot easier to keep silver age books as favorites if you remember them more than you re-read them, but:
New Look Batman/Detective Fox/Sekowsky JLA Goodwin-edited Warrens Archies during the period when they'd have a vignette image from a story panel above the title Ditko Dr. Strange FF, when Kirby's firing on all cylinders (esp if the Inhumans are involved) Short-lived DC series of the late silver (bat Lash, Secret Six, Captain Action, etc.)

And also, I know you didn't mention it, but what "Unknown Soldier" stories appealed to you if you came across any in "Our Army at War" ? Thanks.

Rrrrrrreptisaurus! I think a lot of bronze-age-and-later writers were/are living out there childhood fanboy dreams, and... eh, I miss the Joe Gill style guys who were just doing a job. I miss that adult, ironic distance from goofy material like superheroes and giant monsters.
In Reptisaurus, Konga, and Gorgo everyone involved is a grown up, doing *A* job, not their dream job. But good lord is everyone having fun with it!

I only bought/read new comics during the Silver Age (and I guess a year or so into the Bronze Age), so for me the series I bought (or read friends' copies) on a regular basis were and still are my personal favorites:
Marvel: Fantastic Four, Avengers, X-Men, Marvel Collectors' Item Classics/Marvel's Greatest Comics, Sub-Mariner, Not Brand Echh. I would occasionally pick up other Marvel titles if one of my favorite characters (such as Medusa) guest-starred.
DC: Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Wonder Woman, Teen Titans, Justice League of America, Detective (when Batgirl was the back-up feature), Adventure (for the Legion), Action (ditto), Heart Throbs, Aquaman, Metal Men, Secret Six
Archie: Betty and Veronica, Pep, Laugh, Betty and Me, Reggie and Me
