I voted Batman for a variety of reasons, mainly because I think being a member of such a national, if not global, team works against his very mantra. If your schtick is to inspire fear and dread in your cowardly criminals through subterfuge and shadows, how well is that going to hold up in what I imagine would be the very highly publicized exploits of the JLA? Plus, in recent decades, I hate how it's become so common and even nonchalant over how Bruce is now smart enough to take down any and all foes from lowly street punk to cosmic Darkseid (including his own teammates). It pushes to the breaking point my suspension of disbelief over this mere mortal man who dresses up in a batsuit to fight crime. Instead, I'd rather see Batman more as a support member, perhaps brought aboard in certain situations and crisis more suitable to his capabilities and MO style. While you make perfect sense in leaving Batman off of the team, I'm sure you're well aware of the corporate reasons why he's there. That, and if he was never added to the JLA, you can bet some group of fans would have asked, "What? Where's Batman?" They certainly asked that question about Filmation's animated JLA, which was a part of 1967's The Superman - Aquaman Hour of Adventure, featuring Superman, Green Lantern, Hawkman, the Flash, the Atom and Aquaman (the latter in the title sequence only), but not the guy who was (arguably) the hottest comic character of that year (allegedly, the rights were still held by Greenway/20th Century Fox for the live action TV series). So, no matter how good the idea of Batman not being a JLA member sounds, I think DC and too many fans would not only reject the decision, but see the JLA as a somewhat "lesser" team/concept because of DC's most significant characters was not added.

Regarding Filmation JLA Cartoons, I was very disappointed in not seeing both Aquaman and Batman on that cartoon series and let alone not having Wonder Woman herself too. It was basically a Superman, Hawkman, Green Lantern, The Flash, and the Atom team-up without Aquaman, Batman, and Wonder Woman too. To me, it was a watered down version of the Justice League of America and getting another character in would be a herculean task because these cartoons were 7 minutes long. I totally understand what you are getting at. Thanks for bringing it up.
