robot1a. That is such an amazing throwback bit of sci-fi thinking.
Honorable mention: The Captain (yes, a Superman vehicle made no sense at all, but it--unlike so many comic book modes of transportation--had a slick plausibility about it).

I'm surprised we didn't see the S.H.I.E.L.D. Heli-Carrier...did we?

I'm surprised we didn't see the S.H.I.E.L.D. Heli-Carrier...did we? I looked for a good cover image of it; but couldn't find one with the entire vessel in the image. Everything I saw just had characters standing on the deck; nothing with it in the background, hovering overhead. The closest was Iron Man #118; but it's not a great shot of the carrier and I didn't care for the rendering of it...

I'm surprised we didn't see the S.H.I.E.L.D. Heli-Carrier...did we? For me, it's not an improbable vehicle. I could imagine it existing.

I'm surprised we didn't see the S.H.I.E.L.D. Heli-Carrier...did we? For me, it's not an improbable vehicle. I could imagine it existing. There'd be a hell of a lot of drag on that thing. the closest to reality were the USS Los Angeles, Akron and Macon..... The Los Angeles tested the possibility of launching and recovering aircraft and could carry 3 Sparrowhawk fighters, while the Akron and Macon could hold 5 each in their internal hangar. The planes were lowered on a trapeze mechanism, started their engines and released from the trapeze. they would then fly on their mission. When they returned, they lined up with the trapeze and hooked on, cutting their engines. They were then lifted into the hangar. The became proficient at it and would remove the landing gear when embarked, only replacing them when the planes would be prepped to be offloaded, before docking the airship. Both the Akron and Macon were lost at sea, the Akron in a storm, the Macon due to a structural fault. Only 3 men survived the Akron, while nearly all survived the macon's crash, due to new precautions taken after the loss of the Akron. The Los Angeles was more or less grounded, after that. Instead, the Navy used blimps for convoy escort and coastal patrol, during WW2. The largest of the blimps had a 25 man crew.
