Nice! Is that Esteban Maroto's signature I see in the bottom left corner? Google-imaging "Stripoteka" I see a lot of nice covers, a lot of look like translations of American and Western European comics - did they ever carry any original Yugoslavian comics? |

I used to collect German horror magazines, and I'd seen this cover illo before   Never connected it to Maroto, and I've no idea where it originated. That publisher used artwork from American paperbacks and even some Warren covers, IIRC. Which doesn't take away from it being a cool cover. |

I found a newstand that carried German language magazines. Started with Perry Rhodan, but the horror stuff had cool, lurid covers and looked like pulpish fun. Lots of Lovecraft references, Necronomicon and Old Ones. Don't read a lick of German, but they did look cool. |

Yugoslavia had a pretty strong roster of comic book creators. Stripoteka mostly published foreign comics translated to Serbo-Croatian, but here and there Yu creators found a spot in it as well. I particularly liked the Tarzan comics that were done by Yu creators and they make those Stripoteka's a real treasure among the collectors. Few originals were published there as well, like: Billy The Pljuc. However, the best place to find good YU comic book creations would be YU-Strip which was EKS ALMANAH's (another Yu Magazine) spin-off that offered truly the greatest comics from Yugoslavia. Including ŽELJKO PAHEK's work before majority was reprinted in Heavy Metal. |

I don't suppose any of those Tarzan stories were ever translated to English. It was intended to be published in other countries as well, but I'm not aware of the actual fact of happening. Thank you for the link. That Tarzan strip does look good. And with mentions of Opar, talking w/apes and traveling w/a lion, it looks like they may be somewhat true to the books, too. Shame I'll never get to read them.  |
