Mostly why is Chronicles of Conan trade Volume 34 so damn expensive at 100 bucks on amazon?

The print run was, like, 8.
I've noticed that reprint collections tend to shoot up in value more than actual floppy comics now-a-days. Often 'cause said reprints had tiny print runs, and fans are rediscovering classic runs all the time. So a late period Conan collection which had a print run of maybe a thousand or two thousand copies shoots up in value because of very very little supply and increasing demand.

Are the big labels doing print-on-demand now?
I have the first 10 Dark Horse CHRONICLES books, basically because most of those issues I'd never read, and it was a reasonable way to read the entire series, up to the point where I'd started buying it at my local drugstore.
I've been reading them-- slowly-- usually when I'm at a doctor's office, of having my car worked on. I just got to the last one I have... and if I want to continue, I'm gonna have to (GASP!!!!) dig out the original comics. Well, I'm sure not gonna take those around to doctor's offices and mechanic shops.....

It’s out of print and sellers on Amazon Marketplace are trying to fleece the gullible.

I hate it when trades I want go OOP, refuse to pay over inflated prices! Hang in there & keep looking on eBay and you might come across a reasonably priced "Buy it Now" for Conan v34.

I'll add that by the time you get beyond the first few trades in a long series the interest of the casual fan tends to wan and the print run on subsequent volumes reduces with each volume. Of course there are going to be exceptions (probably The Walking Dead) but I by volume 34 I can't imagine that there was a lot of interest.

Also, print runs are set by Diamond pre-orders for the most part, since stuff like that rarely gets ordered in any volume in the book trade, so not only is it out of print, but most of those printed were to fill pre-orders so there aren't many unsold copies floating around. It's not something a retailer is going to order extras of to have on hand or that bookstores are going to stock at all, so while not technically print on demand, preorders will determine the size of the print run and there will be very little overprint (just enough to cover any potential damages or reorders within the first month or so of its release, so finding copies that weren't sold within the first month of its release is going to be difficult.
It's part of the reason there is little to no growth in the Diamond market, everything is printed based on preorders, so there isn't much left out there for people to buy later.

Also by that point Dark Horse knew they had lost the Conan license to Marvel, so knew they had a very small window in which to sell those later volumes, which also shrunk print runs.
And what publishers, retailers and creators will tell you now is that if you want a book like that, you better pre-order it when it comes out or you likely won't get it for MSRP or at all.
That's the way niche collector products work, and that is what the direct market for comics is now.

I needed Volume 4 of Colleen Doran's A Distant Soil for my reviews. Amazon Marketplace was asking $90 and up. Blech! But I found a Vol 4 on Ebay for $20, with a Volume 2 thrown in as well. Yay! Talk about small press runs...

The thing about Amazon Marketplace is to remember just because a seller is asking a certain price, doesn't mean that is the going rate. Same with ebay. If you want a sense of the going rate, a good place to start is completed auctions that sold to see what prices are actually resulting in sales, and another is to look at what price Lonestar is buying (if they are buying an issue) as they won't pay a price they don't expect to be able to recoup for a book, and their standard mark up for stuff is about 3-4 times of what they buy at. Those were two of the first things I checked when pricing comics or trades when I was helping out at my local shop 4-5 years ago.

Just an addendum for reference, I checked Lonestar, most volumes of Chronicles of Conan they have in stock are selling under MSRP in NM, though Vol. 34 is out of stock. They are only paying $3.18 cash ($6.38 in credit) for NM copies of Vol. 34, so that would put them in the $18-24 range most likely if they were in stock, and MSRP was $19.99, so I wouldn't pay more than MSRP on these if you are willing to be patient and look around for them.
Looking at completed ebay auctions, there were 4 copies that sold-1 on 9/28 for $25 + $4 shipping, 1 on 9/16 for $19.99 plus $4 shipping, 1 on 9/13 for $19.99 w/free shipping, and on on 8/1 for $39.95 plus $4.95 shipping, which seems to be the outlier. So again, don't pay more than $20-$25 for this, it's not the going rate.
