There is a new documentary coming out about Tim Burton's cancelled 1998 Superman film titled The Death of "Superman Lives", and it's sounding like this could have been the wackiest superhero movie of our time. It all begins with this strange looking photo of Nicolas Cage in this Superman costume: I'm sure most of you have seen this photo before. It's hard to believe that we might have seen a Superman like this flying around, but it nearly happened. Add a whacked-out script by Kevin Smith, which featured Supes battling Giant Spiders, a wicked-looking Brainiac, and the death of Superman (by Doomsday) and subsequent rebirth into a Kryptonian robot called the Eradicator...not to mention the Rainbow Robots or the Polar Bears guarding the Fortress of Solitude. Sounds like this was going to be one heck of a mindtrip of a movie. The documentary is going to shed some light on more of the background and story, including props such as the "Eradicator version" of Superman's suit as seen below: And here's some concept art of the Giant Spider battle: And concept art of Brainiac's Skull ship: Lastly, the Documentary trailer: It all makes me wish this movie existed now. But this documentary is going to be the closest we'll get. Jump on the hype train and let's discuss what could have been!

That Nick Cage pic is one of the most horrible things I've ever seen.

If I didn't know that was actual studio property I'd think Nick took it upon himself to pitch the movie with a cosplay suit he commissioned off the internet.

I'm glad this wreck never saw the light of day. Nicolas Cage as Superman is as miscast as a Barack Obama biopic starring Jason Statham.
And Kevin "I never completed Daredevil Target #2 and get my fat arse booted out of Southwest airline" Smith gets zero less than zero marks from me too.
It's a wonder Robert Rodriguez didn't pick up where Tim Burton left off...then we'd get Danny Trejo as Brainiac. Who'd mostly likely steal the show.
Nic should stick to buying rare comics instead of fantasizing about that awful cosplay costume he's in.
Fail.

I know there was some bigwig Hollywood producer in the nineties who insisted every action flick had a battle with a giant spider at the climax. I don't know his name, but apparently he was involved with this film.

Incidentally, I was just flipping through my old copy of Wizard #1 and saw mention of an upcoming Spiderman film slated for 1992. What's the story there?

Yeah, I think it was Jon Peters and he made the same request to the writers of Wild Wild West and it actually made it into the film. Strangely enough he was also one of producers for Superman Returns and Man of Steel. As for the movie itself, I'm sure it would have been bad but part of me still wishes it had been made just because it looks absolutely crazy.
