Back in the day when i was a little kid I was too young to even know about New Mutants while I was more into original Uncanny X-Men, Power Pack and Alpha Flight.
was original New Mutants any good? there anything good to read besides the overrated Demon Bear stuff?

(...) was original New Mutants any good? there anything good to read besides the overrated Demon Bear stuff? Probably not the best person to answer this question, because I checked out a few issues after Sienkiewicz came on (unlike most of comics fandom, apparently, I didn't think he was a good fit for the title). Personally, I think if you're going to read any of it, you should just stick to the first stretch of issues from the graphic novel up to the point Sienkiewicz came on. To my mind, those best portrayed them as a bunch of confused teen X-men in training, and McLeod and then Sal Buscema drew the various characters so they actually looked like children/teenagers, rather than the way Sienkiewicz depicted them - where they looked liked twenty-somethings at best. Outside of that, I later picked up some post-Sienkiewicz issues at random which I thought were ok, like the very special suicide issue (#45) and Annuals #2 & 3. All that said, to your question of whether it was any good, I can't say I ever thought the series was anything beyond solid - I never enjoyed it nearly as much as the other stuff I was reading at the time.

I liked the graphic novel premiere and #1-somewhere into the late 20s. I dropped the title when 'Legion' was the main focus. I liked the story with the Hellions circa #16 &17, just before Sienkiewicz took over. Later Magma (Amara) joined a New Hellions. That might be a good two issues to dip into.

I remember buying the Gn and first 20 or so issues. I had about 10 #1 copies for investment purposes but it never really took off as a key book.

If you hated Demon Bear, then you probably wouldn't like the rest either. See earlier in this thread for my comments about the best issues.

Everything through Sienkiewicz's run is great. Not sure about what came after, I don't think I've ever re-read that. But definitely leave when Claremont does.

The highlight of the after-Sienkiewicz period for me is the Asgard two-parter by Arthur Adams which takes place in New Mutants Special Edition #1 and X-Men Annual #9, between issues #34 and 35. Here is the New Mutants review thread covering issues #13-47. classiccomics.org/thread/5645/claremonts-new-mutants-issue
