Ah, yes, the DC Superfriends comics. I’m not too sure if it’s spelled with or without the space between the Super and the Friends, but in any case, we’ve got our good-old toy-oriented comics. Imaginatext was some kind of blocky toys that always had those ads on TV. I used to see lots of Batman ones when I was younger.
The series got us some funny stuff and references such as:
Flash getting pooped by pigeons.
A human Beepo (aww yeah, Beepo!).
And Aquaman going to call the Super Friends in the UN reunion (why does that Armenian man remind me of someone?).
So we are going to start in sweet, sweet first issue.
Look at everyone. Everyone is so happy there.
Cast:
The Super Friends are composed by Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Wally West Flash (as revealed several issues later) and the John Stewart Green Lantern. The villain of this story is Professor Ivo and his android (described in a footnote by Johnny DC as a robot that looks like a person) Amazo.
What happens?
A bunch of children and their teachers (or camp counselors) are lost in a cave. At the ask of a girl, a teacher/camp counselor says that someone must be looking for them. Batman appears suddenly announcing he found the kids to a walkie-talkie. The Super Friends appear then after him.
I’m also realizing this image quality is horrible. I gotta fix that.
Wait, so Man of Steel, Dark Knight Detective, Amazon Warrior Princess, Power-Ringed Guardian, King of the Sea and Super-Speedster?
And why is Aquaman coming out from the conveniently-placed small lake?
After guiding the kids (and teachers/counselors) out, Professor Ivo appears, saying he is a scientist who does all kinds of good stuff but gets outclassed by the Super Friends in the news. And presents his robot, Amazo.
Yup, totally not evil. Rich, famous and live forever? Kids are smarter than that, Ivo.
John, what are you doing? And how do handcuffs stop floating hands?
The fact Batman’s agility counts as a power makes me question the writers.
Oh, and the fact he didn’t mention Aquaman is a plot point.
Then we get to see the Super Friends in that energy jail. Superman cannot break off, Flash cannot vibrate out, what can they do? Answer: Wonder Woman gets a “I believe in you” speech to Green Lantern and everyone puts their hand on him and break out using The Power Of Friendship. Because that’s what kid books do. Even Scooby-Doo Team-Up did the willpower of others thing.
Wondy’s speeches. The best thing in the world.
Battle ram of justice! And as per usual in those comics, Aquaman has an idea.
After saving a bunch of people from an earthquake, Ivo goes to battle them again, but now, they are not using their powers. And what does that mean? The Bat-Plane and the Super-Mobile, of course!
And then Aquaman goes “What about my powers?” So Ivo sends Amazo to the lake.
You can see that “Ha, sucka.” face Aquaman has.
Where he’s short-circuited because machines and water don’t mix.
And to Generic Kiddie Book Jail he goes!
Extras:
The book has half a page of Superman’s origin and an activity:
This cutout:
Plus a page of “You can also be a Super Friend”.
Thoughts:
Did I like it? Well, for a first issue, it was okay. A simple story with easy reading. This comic is nice. The Super Friends are good heroes. Ivo and Amazo are memorable. Classic tale.
References:
None that I can find here, aside of the Super-Mobile.
