I am so, so sorry, gang. Between weather-dictated absences, medical issues, and my impending move, I completely forgot about the TDCCC wrap-up thread until this morning!
I don’t think I’m talking out of turn when I say this has been one of the most fun, most entertaining Classic Comics Christmases ever. The sheer variety of crossovers cited has been exciting, enlightening, and occasionally weird (it’s hard enough to believe Godzilla vs. Charles Barkley was actually a thing, let alone that two of you lovable lunatics voted for it). My want list has certainly grown as a result and I bet mine isn’t the only one. But before we plunge into your lists, what say we take a moment to look at some sizzling stats, shall we?
25 participants cast 290 votes for 238 crossover stories. Taking the gold with 5 votes was Alan Brennert’s moving Deadman and Supergirl story from 1985’s Christmas with the Super-Heroes #2. In second place with 4 votes is Spider-Man and Red Sonja from Marvel Team-Up #79. The bronze is split between 9 different team-ups, each receiving 3 votes. They are:
Archie and The Punisher, Archie Meets The Punisher #1
Batman and Captain America, Batman/Captain America
Batman and Tarzan, Batman/Tarzan: Claws of the Catwoman #1-4
Conan and Elric, Conan the Barbarian #14-15
Conan and Solomon Kane, The Savage Sword of Conan #219-20
Enemy Ace and Bat Lash, Guns of the Dragon #1-4
Green Arrow and Warlord, Green Arrow #27-28
Marvel western heroes, Blaze of Glory #1-4
Superman and Spider-Man, Marvel Treasury Edition #28
27 crossovers got 2 votes each—too many to type out—leaving 78 getting a vote apiece. Interestingly, two of the third place finishers garnered the most #1 spots, Archie/Punisher and the second Superman/Spider-Man team-up getting three nods each. Batman/Captain America was chosen #1 by two voters.
Marvel was the top vote-getter with 104 citations, followed by DC at 90 and Dark Horse placing a distant but respectable third at 19 votes.
The crossovers cited spanned seven decades, breaking down as follows:
1940s: 5
1950s: 1
1960s: 47
1970s: 73
1980s: 75
1990s: 64
2000s: 27
The top five characters cited were Batman (45 votes), Spider-Man (39), Superman (27), Daredevil (15); and The Thing (13).
