I started reading the new non reprint Thor’s in the 70’s with the Buscema issues. I enjoyed around 189-190’s with Hela finally winning and The Silver Surfer helping out in the double sized 193. I also second the Celestials story line that culminated in 300. Nothing beats the Lee/ Kirby issues , though.

I confess to not reading the entire Simonson run.

For me, it's:
1) Lee/Kirby
2) Aaron with Ribic/Dautermann
3) Simonson
4) DeFalco/Frenz
5) JMS/ Coipel

Rob Rodi & Esad Ribic's "Loki" mini-series/tpb is one I would put into the Thor Greatest Hits pile.

The " Vikings" mini series was gross and awesome at the same time.

Might as well list what I think are the best issues from the Thor run of 1966-1996 (#126-502) for starters.
10. Thor #266 (December, 1977) - "...So Falls the Realm Eternal!"
9. Thor #491 (October, 1995) - "Nailed Up"
8. Thor #161 (February, 1969) - "Shall a God Prevail?"
7. Thor #159 (December, 1968) - "The Answer at Last!"
6. Thor #228 (October, 1974) - "Ego: Beginning and End!"
5. Thor #300 (October, 1980) - "Twilight of the Gods!"
4. Thor #366 (April, 1986) - "Sir!"
3. Thor #340 (February, 1984) - "Though Hel Should Bar the Way!"
2. Thor #380 (June, 1987) - "Mjolnir's Song"
1. Thor #353 (March, 1985) - "Doom II"

If you want to narrow down the Kirby run into something a little more manageable, how about #125 to #157? That's Hercules, Pluto, the Knights of Wundagore, Tana Nile, the Colonizers, the Black Galaxy, Ego, the Wrecker, Mangog and a few other miscellaneous King Hell Capers.

Nothing was better than the little saga that ran in issues 154-157. Even Vinnie Colletta's inks couldn't ruin it. Dare I say it, I sincerely feel that they even enhanced it, in some respects.

An unpopular opinion to be sure, but one I share; I liked Colletta’s inking on Thor. Beyond the matter of erasing artwork, which is deplorable to be sure, I think Colletta’s scritchy-scratchy inking gave the book a certain folk-tale quality (reminding me somewhat of Ivan Bilibin’s work).

I have this in Marvel Treasury Edition #10. Imagine this story, only bigger! It's glorious.

I thought that there were a lot of good Thor stories in the #275-301 range. Also the #118-122 range was excellent, as well as #129-135.

Thor #300 was epic, except at least on copies I've had, the printing was abominable. In fact usually any giant or annual Marvel from the late '70s and early '80s was not best quality... something about the square binding process perhaps... You can't beat the visual of Thor having long convos with the oversized disembodied former eye of Odin!
