Monday was crazy here at the hospital so totally forgot to post. Which one this week: Monthly Issues or Trade Waiting?Used to be I was monthly buyer but the times they have changed. Now I am a Trade Waiter since so many of the stories are dragged out and many times the story reads better in one sitting rather than waiting every 30 days for the next chapter. Also the LCS sells out of an issue (especially even when I have a pull list?) and speculators will buy up. And, these days a Trade will cost you less than the original issues new off the shelf with discounts and pre-order specials if you are willing to patiently wait a few months. What about you all? Trade waiting, if I were to go back to regular collecting. It would have been hard to swap at the time, but since I've now stopped, it is nice being freed of the monthly sample instead of getting a completed product to enjoy in a sitting.

Hm. Haven't participated in this thread so far. Here's my answer to all queries thus far:
Marvel
Trades
Veronica Mary Jane Ginger Jeannie Midge Jughead
... By the way, in that last set of questions, you didn't include another one of the frequently 'either/or' choices that often appears in online polls: Jennifer or Bailey (from WKRP in Cincinnati). My answer to that one is Bailey...

Marvel, and it's not even close. DCs characters are in some ways the archetypes, but I find them bland and boring, and they have been consistently that way for 40+ years - no matter what talent comes in, they all seems to be dragged into the mire. I also hate the continual rebootings so I never know whether anything I read is "real".

I will expand on my answer. Marvel because of their soap opera style of writing. It made you care to tune in the following month to see if the characters would finally get the girl or fight back against their flaw. Dc until the mid 70's always felt like the stories were interchangeable.

This weeks Which One is a go for broke and think hard: These are all variations of the same idea. Whether it be date or love or marry or to be. Choice is yours.... Betty or Veronica Gwen or Mary Jane Maryann or Ginger Samantha the witch or Jeannie the Genie Midge or Ethel Archie or Reggie or Jughead For myself, it will always be the girl next door who can be your best friend/buddy, stand by you thick or thin and doesn't try to change you but still manages to make you a better person. Gimme Betty, Gwen, Maryann, Midge any day of the week or month or year or lifetime. Samantha Stevens the woman witch over Jeannie the s illy girl type .As for being : I have been both Archie and Jughead at different times of my life and given to making a choice: Jughead wins. He takes life all in stride, doesn't worry over anything (other than being trapped by Ethel) and stands by his friends through thick and thin. And he wears a crown declaring him as King of Best Friends while eating more than his weight in food and still keeping a slim jim trim figure. We need more Juggie's in the world! So then, put your thinking caps on boys and girls and make your choice! Betty Gwen Mary-ann Samantha Midge (is this one even a question?) I'm a little bit of Archie, Reggie and Jughead all rolled into one. With a fair bit of Dilton thrown in as well. And Bailey over Jennifer by a country mile.

I never understood the appeal of Archie to either Betty, Veronica, or Cheryl Blossom, but then next to Reggie, Jughead, Moose, Dilton... er, I'll still take Hawkman. Or I know, Ambrose (formerly Little Ambrose).

Betty. I usually prefer brunettes to blondes, but I also tend to dislike spoiled rotten heiresses. Mary Jane, hands down. I've always been partial to redheads. Never really watched either show, so not all that familiar with their characters. Gonna have to pass on this one. Midge, 'cause I'm a glutton for punishment. Jughead.

Count me on Team Ethel.
As you probably know or guessed, the portrayal of these characters have changed over the years. The classic versions of both characters are fairly unappealing. Ethel is drawn to be unattractive, and her character is one-note: she wants to get with Jughead. That's it. Midge, on the other hand, though drawn cute, is actually quite the sociopath in the early days - she often intentionally fools around behind Moose's back, both for the thrill of it, but just as much for the thrill of seeing Moose beat the crap out of the guys she's fooling around with. She loves the power of it. Advantage: Ethel.
In recent years, both characters have been updated. Ethel, though not drawn to be conventionally hot, isn't shown to be hideously ugly either, just tall, gangly, and square-jawed. But she's also really cool - into sci-fi and alternative rock bands - and she's very kind hearted, volunteering with the elderly and disadvantaged. Midge, on the other hand, sands up for herself with Moose a lot more, and... that's it. She's still mostly a blank slate defined by her relationships, just in a different way. Big, big advantage to Big Ethel.
Also, I think we should have some more men in this poll for those in our membership who are more interested in the menfolk!
Movie Steve Rogers vs. movie Tony Stark is one I have seen bounced around quite a bit online.

Yeah, the newer versions of Midge and Ethel are much better than their old caricatures. Really, these days when I think of them and Reggie and Moose and Dilton I see them in their "adult" versions from the ongoing Archie Marries Betty/Veronica.
As for the guys, it would be about Steve and Tony and Thor and Clint or Clark and Bruce and Barry and Aquabro and Cyborg? Of course you can add the same concept into almost any movie or television series as well. Kirk or Spock? James West or Artemis Gordon? Hawkeye or Trapper John? Uhura or Nurse Chapel? So forth and so on....

For Ginger vs Mary Anne and Samantha vs Jeanie I have almost the same response: when I was a small kid I liked Mary Anne and Jeannie better, but as I get older, I find myself leanng more towards Ginger and Samantha - perhaps because as a small kid, I found Mary Anne and Jeanie cuter, friendlier, less intimidating? I'm not really sure, just speculating.
None of the Archie characters ever really appealed to me so I don't have any favourites amongst them. I would say that I like Veronica as a visual cartoon design slightly more than Betty, that's about it, but they're both easy on the eyes - and about the only reason I can see for reading an Archie comic. As characters, neither really stands out more than the other.
Gwen and Mary Jane, I like them both in different ways: Mary Jane for her independence and vivacity, and Gwen has that aura of innocence and tragedy around her - and John Romita made them both so attractive! This is going just by the Spider-Man comics I read up to the late 70s or very early 80s, I don't know much about anything beyond that and when I see images of the current versions, often they don't even look like the same characters to me, so I don't feel any connection with them.

This week's Which One: Batman or Superman?
Both are great, But I am a follower of the Batman. Not just because of my name (Bruce Wayne Hinds, my mom didn't know it at the time, I was given middle names of my Dad and Uncle but a serendipitous choice none the less) alone but because the concept and characters all capture my attention and curiosity. The visual artistry employed for depiction of the Dark Knight Detective alone would be enough to get a youngsters eye, but when combined with the group of villains which bedevil the Bat are, excuse my language: Batshit Crazy! Add in the writing for Wayne being a detective who actually uses his brain to decipher clues while valiantly hunting the despicable villains of the city and you can't but love the comic book.
Growing up on Batman Cartoons and the Adam West Television show and then the Burton movies come along for the big screen and all of the various comic book series to choose from, there is no shortage of Bat entertainment to enjoy for this happy Batfan!

Superman.
Has there been anything likable about Batman or his stories post-Crisis? The only thing worse than the unrelentingly grim and dour stories are the ones where he's reached Wolverine levels of fanservice and is completely godlike in his skills and abilities. Where's the drama in a character who can defeat anyone at any time just because he's really popular? Hard pass.
