George Perez his turns hand to some classic comic strip characters. (And now I really wish that Perez had done a Modesty Blaise book. )

(And now I really wish that Perez had done a Modesty Blaise book. ) Walt Simonson is the artist I would like to see do it; original artist Jim Holdaway was one of his artistic influences. You can see it in some of his earlier work, especially Manhunter and Christine St Clair.

I almost went with this — it's set in 1972, and Stan Lee is the emcee of a Howler's reunion! If only Stan had made the cover!

You can see it in some of his earlier work, especially Manhunter and Christine St Clair. They're both among my favourite artists but I don't see either one as suitable for Modesty Blaise. Simonson's female characters have never been a strong point, at least to my eyes, and Perez is very much a superhero artist - and a great one, but I think Modesty Blaise needs a more realistic approach.
I still regret that Al WIlliamson never got the job: his style was perfect for it and the sample pages he submitted looked fantastic. And apparently Peter O'Donnell agreed, years after the fact, but due to some break-down in communication he never saw Williamson's try-out pages at the time.

I thought Dick Giordano did a very good Modesty Blaise, more Romero than Holdaway in style, but I started reading the strip when Romero was artist, so he tends to be my default Modesty artist.
