To me these are the most interesting types of conventions. I think Southern California is long past due for their own form of Ape or SPX type convention focusing on comics. I believe there is a 'zine convention in LA that most likely has some comics, but I'd love to see a comics specific one. Good luck this year and post some pics if you get a chance.

It was an interesting show last year. It was a first year show, and the weather was icy in the morning, so attendance was kind of sparse early on, and only picked up a little, but it was a good day to meet with a lot of other indy creators of comics and film, and indy artists and just talk about what was being done, what folks were working on etc. There was more time to talk with creators I knew like Dustin Carson (No Gods) and Eric Adams (Lackluster World) and meet some new folks than there is at a show like Gem City with a higher volume of traffic, the down side is we don't sell as much at these types of shows and it's harder to make your table money back. ICE was my first show with the Studio (though I had done a few store appearances with them, as last year's Champion City I worked as a vendor for my lcs rather than as a guest on artist alley since none of the stuff I had worked on was out at that point) and where the first book Amy or I had worked on debuted. Gary, the studio head was supposed to be with us, but was sick as a dog that morning, so Amy and I were flying solo and making it all up as we went along. It seems like a lifetime ago, bit only 10 months as I have done so many shows since then. I am looking forward to it, but have a lot to do between now and then, as we are trying something new and doing a coloring book to have something for all the younger fans who get dragged to creator tables by their parents at shows. We're hoping to have the book done in time to debut at ICE (I am currently working on the pencils for the third of 4 pages I am doing, and Amy has 3 of the 4 pages she is doing all done, that leaves 18 pages in process by other studio members). We launched the coloring contest that is a part of this at Champion City this past weekend-color our Zombie! -so this is something we are hoping will not only create a new product, but turn some eyes towards what we are doing. We'll see how it goes...

Sneak peak at early pencils for one of the pages... It took me about another 4 hours to finish the pencils on that page. These are the finished pencils for another page but there are a few tweaks I want to make in the inking stage, but I need to get the page scanned in before I start playing with the inking process. This is Amy's zombie for the project that is the image used for the coloring contest and formatted the way we will set up the pages with the Letter is for... set up. -M
