I'm honestly just curious to know what shipped this week. Is the industry "back to normal"?

Basketful of Heads #7Written by Joe Hill Art by Leomacs Summary: With a final swing of her axe (as an aside google chrome says that's a typo and it should be ax. Weird.) June faces a revelation more terrible than any of her previous heads ever revealed.
Plot: This final issue of Joe Hill's inaugural entry of his Hillhouse line was definitely a bittersweet read; bitter because it had come to a close, but sweet because that twist ending was truly satisfying. From the start Hill told us that yes, there was a Federal investigation focused on the activities on Brody Island, and that the government mole was "El Ee" which everyone assumed was June's boyfriend Liam Ellis, but Hill gave us an ending much better. Instead of June coming to the aid of her altruistic boy friend she learns that he's just as bad as the rest of the people she beheaded...so she keeps on chopping. It's a shocking twist and the power of it makes it so the scooby doo like reveal the real informant was a total unknown to the reader doesn't feel like a cheat...because ultimately the investigation didn't matter because June had already come to terms with the ugliness of small town life.
Art: Leomacs got to do some real grotesque images right down to the wire with a truly gross bisection of the chief of police, but he kept his balance of humor two with that last image of the heads floating in the water on the last page. It's a tough line between horror and humor but he really nailed it which gave the book a really unique feel all along. This is a book that's just begging to be adapted to film or television and if it does I pray they do half as well at balancing the gore with the dark humor that Leomacs and Hill have in this book.

Like a lot of things it seems to be coming in waves, DC seems to have the most content out while Marvel, Darkhorse, Image and IDW are just starting to get back into it this week after laying low. Hopefully we start to approach normal in the coming month, but for me it's still digital only as the shop I've been frequenting for the last few years is still not open as it's in a mall which isn't allowed to open until mid-June. |

Like a lot of things it seems to be coming in waves, DC seems to have the most content out while Marvel, Darkhorse, Image and IDW are just starting to get back into it this week after laying low. Hopefully we start to approach normal in the coming month, but for me it's still digital only as the shop I've been frequenting for the last few years is still not open as it's in a mall which isn't allowed to open until mid-June. My LCS let me know that one thing on my pull list came in this week (Marauders #10). I might pick it up later today, but it probably won't be until the weekend, as it is a little out of the way. I'm just hoping the two Epic Collections I asked them to pull for me (a Fantastic Four collection and the first 13 issues of Conan the Barbarian) come in soon. Been holding off on reading my Conan run (I have #15 to #115 in floppies) until I get that Epic so I can read it all in order. |

I'm currently halfway through John Carter, Warlord of Mars and up to Iron Man #210 on my reads through those series, so I probably won't get to that Conan run until the fall. |

Superman: Man of Tomorrow #6Written by Robert Venditti Art by Paul Pelletier Summary: When Luthor's technology appears to have Superman pinned down for the count the people of Metropolis tag in.
Plot: In this second(and final) part of "What Makes a City?" Venditti gives us the battle between the power of the human spirit versus the might of the machine. Sure, it's a little simplistic and yeah we've seen the average people coming to the hero's aid when the chips are down before but coupled with Superman it just feels right so even though it's not terribly original it still makes you smile. In addition to that, again, although it was nothing really novel Luthor's defense that his machines were installed and operated 100% legally and that he could not be held accountable for the incident(Clark Kent being shot as a criminal) that made Superman go off because it was a simple glitch and that Superman was the actual criminal was just perfect.
Art: Pelletier continued his tour to force in portraying the power of Superman with this issue, he's given us some great images in the past but that shot of Superman struggling against the beam was really great.

Frankenstein Undone #2Written by Mike Mignola Art by Ben Stenbeck Colored by Brennan Wagner Summary: Frankenstein awakens from his slumber to learn that his host was a ghost of a long dead Hyperborean.
Plot: This is the long delayed second issue of Frankenstein Undone which originally came out almost six months ago...and is itself a prequel to Frankenstein Underground which itself came out in 2015 so I necessarily embarked in a reread before jumping in to this issue in order to refresh my memory and in comparison to the earlier chapters I really found this one to be lacking. While the previous issues were thoughtfully paced, dense stories exploring the monster's musing on humanity this issue upped the pace considerably moving the creature(who has now taken his creator's name) from the arctic wastes to being once again in the company of man on a sea voyage bent on discovering the lost city of Hyperboria. I don't mind the quest so much, this is a prequel to Underground which saw Frankenstein discovered in a subterranean city so this book was obviously meant to show us how he got there but what's missing is the why of it. Sure, we have three more issues to get that so it could be satisfactory in the end but the lack of a motivation here was really jarring...though not as jarring as how readily accepted Frankenstein was by the mariners, sure his prodigious strength freed their ship from the ice but good deeds never got ol' Frank any good graces in the past so to see the crew react to him as if he was just a normal man struck me as really odd.
Art: While I do love Stenbeck's creature; it's both horrifying and relatable at the same time I think the heavy lifting in what makes this book so beautiful was done mainly by colorist Ben Wagner. It's not often that I stop to really enjoy and contemplate the colors of a book but it's impossible not to here as the pallets chosen by Wagner actually add to the narrative; when Frankenstein finds himself at piece in the village, the color palette is all warm reds, yellows and comforting earthtones. But when he awakens to find it was all a dream we get the bleak greys and whites that remind you of how the world looks after you awaken suddenly from a vivid dream And in the end as the creature rejoins European society Wagner washes out the palette here so that everything seems to pale in comparison to world Frankenstein dreamed he shared with man, making you mistrust the acceptance granted to him. The changes are drastic but their implications are subtle and I can't wait to see more.
Grade: 7/10
