"You're a duck!" "Waugh! You need bigger wings to get off the ground, kid! Why are they attached to your head, anyway?" It was funny to me that Gerber never thought to pair the two up. He could have done a great road trip/seeing America parody The Howard the Duck series leaves the impression that Gerber wasn't too interested in bringing in superhero guest-stars. Spider-Man was shoe-horned into the first issue as an obvious sales gimmick and there was that Defenders story in the Treasury Edition, but by and large, I doubt he would have seen it as an approach he wanted to take with the character.

I have a bunch of What If scenarios for the penciling greatness of Gene Colan I wish could have been explored. If he did some work with DC for illustrating titles like The Haunted Tank giving it a more horrific foreboding atmosphere to the suffering of war. Would have loved to see Colan drawing the Creature Commando's as well. Imagine Colan's magic placed upon Andrew Bennett of I, Vampire! What gothic demonization could Colan do with the Hollywood fun of Blue Devil? Oh the amazing wonder oozing out of the Colan pencil for a long Swamp Thing run of stories. How about Colan and Grell with Green Arrow the Longbow hunter? I often wonder about The original Doom Patrol with Colan instead of Premiani?
Then I just imagine what could come from Colan given series that suit his style and would benefit from his skills. Like giving him Tarzan and his jungle world. To see Colan unleashed on a Three Musketeer's ongoing. How grand would Robin Hood be in the hands of Gene? I ponder upon Colan given a true pirate or swashbuckler or if Englehart/Colan worked together with a Mark Shaw, Manhunter series. What If Colan had made his mark with Werewolf by Night rather than on Dracula? I drool at the possibility of Colan having been given a Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider run.
Soooooo many possibilites unexplored...

What if Siegel and Shuster had managed to sell the Superman concept to one of the comic strip syndicates and it was never available for National to buy and anchor Action Comics #1? Would super-heroes still have been the sales juggernaut of the 40s with all the other imitations following Superman? If so, would they be in comic books or comic strips?

What if Scooby-Doo became a Marvel property - and we got Scooby-Doo Team-Up under the Marvel umbrella? I mean, gotta be worth seeing Daredevil and the Scooby Gang against Mister Fear, right? Or, Shaggy and Scooby running for their lives when Bruce Banner turns into the Hulk? Unfortunately when Marvel did have the Hanna Barbera properties and did a Scooby Doo title, they kept them separate from their own characters... I mean they didn't even use the Living Mummy for this one... -M I'd be willing to bet the terms of the license precluded crossovers; though, knowing Marvel, they considered the H-B characters to be beneath theirs. They haven't exactly had Donald Duck meet up with the Hulk, though I suspect Disney isn't letting Marvel do those kinds of things.

What if O’Neil and Adams kept producing stories for the Green Lantern series ? Although I wonder if Neal Adams ever did a long run on any title. What if the Kree Skull war was likewise allowed to be extended the way Adams wanted it to be ?

What if He-Man knocked the Hulk out with one punch? (It’d happen!)

Another What If: Marvel and DC let Jack Kirby do what he wished and that was to be an idea man. Creating series initially with maybe a years worth of his own story and artwork, then turning the titles over to others to interpret from there after he set up the basic groundwork. Can you imagine if money were no object and they went for the best options given the time?
Steranko on Mister Miracle John Buscema on Demon or New Gods or Kamandi Neal Adams on New Gods or Kamandi Neal Adams on Devil Dinosaur Gene Colan on Demon or Kamandi Curt Swan on Demon or Kamandi Jim Aparo on Machine Man or Kamandi or Forever People Neal Adams on Eternals Joe Kubert on Demon or Kamandi or Devil Dinosaur Herb Trimpe on Devil Dinosaur or Machine Man or Kamandi Sal Buscema on Kamandi or Forever People or Jimmy Olsen Steve Englehart on Forever People Steve Gerber on Forever People or Devil Dinosaur Doug Moench on Demon or Machine Man or Devil Dinosaur Mike Grell on Machine Man or Devil Dinosaur or Mister Miracle
Further along down the line:
George Perez on New Gods or Eternals or Machine Man John Byrne on Devil Dinosaur or Mister Miracle Roger Stern on New Gods or Eternals John Romita Jr on New Gods or Machine Man The Kubert Bro's on Devil Dinosaur or Machine Man or Forever People Mark Schultz on Devil Dinosaur Keith Giffen on Mister Miracle or Forever People or Machine Man Dave Stevens on Mister Miracle or Kamandi Ron Frenz on Machine Man or Jimmy Olsen
and so forth and so on...

What if Marvel sided with their artists in the late 60s and Stan Lee left for DC, leaving Kirby in charge?
What if the shared universe concept never took off, and books all remained separate?
What if Marvel stayed in real time?
What if DC really did a hard reboot with all new #1s after Crisis?
What if the Marvel heroes never returned from Image?
What if the Ultimate universe actually replaced the main Marvel U?
What if DC did the New 52 as an offshoot ala the Ultimate Universe instead of a replacement?
What if Crisis flopped, and events didn't become a thing?

Just dawned on me for another DC War comic Colan would have worked wonders upon: Unknown Soldier! What a stunning series that could have been under the pencil of Gene the Dean! Colan was so adept at utilizing "realistic" faces for characters and his way with light and shadows would only have deepened the mysterious undercover mood and aspects of the series.

What if super-hero comics never survived the Golden Age and instead, pirate comics had become all the rage? Imagine if "Tales of the Black Freighter" had become a TV series, or even a movie? It might have looked like this...

Another What If recurring dream revolves around Jim Aparo working for Marvel. How great would Aparo doing Marvel Team Up be with Spidey? Seeing his version of all the great and not so greats! Aparo on Daredevil is how awesome to contemplate? Aparo doing 70s Captain America and Falcon is all kinds of wonderful. Gimme an Aparo Black Panther series please. What would a Antman/Giant Man/Yellowjacket/Wasp ongoing be like with Hank going through ALL his identities & costumes? An Aparo X-Men, originals or new would be so cool. Aparo doing the Marvel Western heroes! So much goodness which might have been given us... Aparo told me that Marvel had tried to recruit him several times. He felt he was well-treated at DC and didn't choose to jump ship.

What if Don Newton lived?
What if Steve Ditko had been offered a full time position at Tower Comics after he left Marvel (he freelanced for them and did incredible work)?
What if Steve Englehart and Frank Miller had been allowed to control the Post-Crisis Superman reboot (it had been their idea)?
What if Batman: Year One had been released as a non-continuity graphic novel (as originally envisioned)?
What if Jim Shooter had not been fired from Valiant?
What if Len Wein stayed on the X-Men after the first few issues?
What if Bob Harras never gained control of the X-Men office?
What if Image had gotten their books out on time in the early '90s and maintained that early momentum/hype?
What if Todd McFarlane's original plan to play in Major League Baseball worked out?

The two "What Ifs" that everybody is thinking, but no one wants to say:
What if Jaxxon, the green space-bunny from Marvel's old Star Wars comic, hadn't been hated by George Lucas and had spun off into his own mini-series or ongoing (an idea that Roy Thomas actually idly toyed with)?
What if Brother Power the Geek hadn't been cancelled with issue #3?
