Another $2 TPB; this one was worth far more than that. It collects the first seven issues of the Fairest series, which I guess is a spin-off of the Fables series that I haven't read. Apart from sporadic material about Gepetto that I didn't understand, it's a stand-alone story. The first six issues inject Ali Baba into the story of Briar Rose and the Snow Queen, which is one of the permutations of the Sleeping Beauty fable. There's a fun imp who overflows with anachronistic comments about Firefly, DVDs, and the like. Willingham puts a very clever spin on the notion of "fairest of them all." The story zips along and has some witty moments, but the main attraction is the art. Phil Jiminez' pencils and Andy Lannning's inks look great; colorist Andrew Dalhouse deserves special mention as well for incredibly tasteful and detailed work. The seventh issue is a droll detective noir that mashes up "Beauty and the Beast" and "St. George and the Dragon." The sepia tones are appropriate to the story, but not as beautiful as the previous arc.

Most of Fairest is quite good... there are a couple stinkers (the one with Sleeping Beauty was a bit too much, and a couple of the last ones were meh), but overall it's a great companion to the main book.
You should read Fables. It's amazing.. especially the first uber arc (the first 75 issues). After that there are a few inconsistent bits, but still great.... by far the best series I've read the whole thing of.

Sounds interesting. I'm sad to see that Fables doesn't seem to have any kind of omnibus.
