There is a bit of a tangent on this topic going on in the What Classic Comics Have You Purchased thread, but it deserves its own thread for discussion and images. I became interested in it on a road trip to visit my mom a couple years back where we took the scenic route rather than interstates and drove through a number of small towns in upstate New York and I came across a statue of Marmaduke and it's creator Brad Anderson in Brocton, NY. Foolish me didn't document it, but I did a little googling and found this photo of the statue I continued to look to find some other examples of similar phenomenon, not always in hometowns, but honoring comic strip characters or artists. In Idaho Springs there's a Steve Canyon statue... Scotsdale Az has this tribute to Bill Keane and Family Circus... Popeye in Chester, Il again in Alma, AK Crystal, TX Peanuts in Santa Rosa,CA and in St. Paul, MN Dick Tracy in Naperville, IL Archie in Meredith, NH Superman and Lois Lane in Metroplis, Il Captain America in Brooklyn, NY Dennis the Menace in Monterey, CA This one's for shaxper Corto Maltese in Angouleme, France (site of one of the largest comic festivals in Europe) There are probably lots more but that's a start for now. -M

A couple of additional notes-The Peanuts statue shown from Santa Rosa is just one form a much larger installation featuring almost the entire cast of the strip.
Angouleme also has more comic-related installations.
Belgium, in particular Brussels, seems to be a hot spot for this kind of public art. The posts in the other thread showed some, but I came across a lot more. I was trying to focus on the US (with the exception of the Corto Maltese statue which I couldn't resist posting) so didn't post any more. Japan, expecially Tokyo, seems ot have a lot of anime-related statuary and installations as well.

Vision does seem like a Joy Division kind of Synthezoid.

I think the fact that the artwork is very much Barry Windsor Smith in style is a nice touch, which does add another UK tie to the piece with the Joy Division quote.

There's two Herge statues; one of Tintin and one of Mr. Remi himself...

This one I always thought was awesome. Sheffield That is beautiful. I did a quick check, the artist calls himself Cept. I think the fact that the artwork is very much Barry Windsor Smith in style is a nice touch, which does add another UK tie to the piece with the Joy Division quote. It's modeled on/heavily based on a panel by Rick Leonardi (inked by the Akin-Garvey team) from Vision and Scarlet Witch #1 (first series)

Here's an unorthodox take on Tintin & Captain Haddock from a building in Paris: And a more conventional look from Brussels:
