I liked Todd Mcfarlane's run on ASM, though I also contribute that heavily to Michelinie's writing on the book which was really fun and made him my favorite Spider-man writer.

Ok guys, which one was your favorite out of this bunch? As long as Scott Williams is carrying him on his back, I'll take Jim Lee.

I also didn't like how ripped Spiderman got. He was supposed to be a nerd, right? Not a super ripped body builder. If you've ever seen someone as ripped as McFarlane's Spiderman in office clothes, you can still tell the dude is super jacked. My doctor is like that, and the button down shirt isn't hiding all that muscle. People would have known. Peter being muscular wasn't new.

Cyclops wasn't undercover as a geek and constantly being picked on by mere mortals. Wolverine bullied Cyclops, but he's a super powered immortal. I would say having a wife that looks like a Playboy centerfold is out of character too. MJ was supposed to be attractive, and out of his league, but she wasn't supposed to look like Hugh Hefner's girlfriends. I think half the fun of the Johnny Romita issues is seeing Peter transform from the wallflower geek that gets picked on into a more assertive and social guy. That transition happened longer before McFarlane got his pencil on the character. As for MJ, I like to think she is (or was...) God (Kirby) throwing Pete a bone. He regularly risks his life as Spider-Man with no reward and his professional life is constantly in the toilet but at the end of the day he gets to go home to the hottest woman in NYC. Of all the ladies in comics MJ is the one thats a 12/10.

There's a difference between being athletic and being an inhumanly jacked bodybuilder with zero percent bodyfat. Look at the thighs in the image you posted. Now look at these I'm not sure if I've ever seen a thigh that ripped on an actual human. Look at that torso, muscles bulging from everywhere, showing through clothing even. Get a bodybuilder, put him in a spandex suit, and you won't see that level of definition in his torso. Spiderman now has the body of this man.

I was just pointing out that the character was already far from his skinny original self. As someone has said, with Romita Sr the change was already evident. Even by the end of the Ditko era, he was already more athletic.

John Romita's Mary Jane is about ten times more attractive than whatever that other thing is.

I cannot speak of the horror a few posts up. That is...wow. Romita's is far preferable, must agree.

Yeah, but McFarlane's whole style is crazy (sometimes comedic) exaggeration. Like the Hulk cover posted below is a visual punchline - The Hulk is too big and tough to fit, comfortably, onto this cover! Rimshot! He's really, waaaaaay far on the "cartoonist" end of the scale, with John Romita being completely over on the other end in the "illustrator" category.

Does anyone remember McFarlane's work at DC before he moved to Marvel? His Infinity Inc. was full of randomly thrown in pin-ups filling up half the pages sometimes. It was quite odd.

Does anyone remember McFarlane's filler issue of Daredevil, issue 241? Almost in the same vein as his Spider-Man vibe, but without the bendy bodies.
