I didn't get a chance to explain why my name showed up as "Elizabeth Allen (Listening)".
My wife has discovered virtual song circles. The Portland Folk Music Society does one every Saturday night and the Seattle Folklore Society does it on Sunday nights. These are Zoom meetings where everyone who joins takes a turn singing a song, or you can just listen by adding "Listening" to your name. She had this laptop in the song circle last night while she worked on the other laptop.
The quality of the music in the song circles varies very widely - there are professional musicians and people who couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, and everything in between. The songs are mostly in the folk genre, with a mostly left-wing viewpoint, but not all. When it's your turn, you can sing anything you want. I've joined a few times. Mostly I sing songs by Lou & Peter Berryman because my wife loves them, but I've started to branch out - I did a Merle Haggard tune last weekend and I've got songs by Oscar Brown Jr. and Michael Franti on tap for the near future, along with more Berrymans.
