Hey Brutalis.. that your first time reading Elfquest? What'd you think? Shards is one of my favorites . 2nd time around on reading the Elves Quest as I read it when originally published. Not read since though so it is almost like a new read. Bits, pieces or scenes spark my memories while other parts I draw complete blanks on. I was lucky in stumbling upon the Pini's masterpiece with issue 1 and was instantly captivated with the world. With Shards I think the world building took on a larger aspect with expanding from just the story of the wolfrider's. It embraces humans, trolls, elves and explores deeper the similarities and differences of the races while they interact and influence one another. The tribe's come into their own as their individual voices become much more distinct, rather than just their roles as healer, scout, tree shaper, etc. I really like the Brandon McKinney art during this time. His work captures Wendy while adding his own touches. He moves it away from the manga influences giving it a more mythical, magical fairy tale feel.

I agree.. the art is really good, though I wouldn't have been able to place why as well. I feel like after Shards, there were just too many disparate plots that never really came together, but at the time, it was a nice, focused story that added quite alot.

Since I am working tonight, I doubt I will get to any more in January, so the totals:
overall I read the equivalent of approximately 137 issues (depending how you count up some trades/OGN page counts.
Towards my 2021 goals: 72 towards the 1000 issues I own I wanted to read (so on pace for only 864) 6 of the 50 trades/OGN I wanted to read (on pace for 72)
on the prose front 0 of the 10 Wheel of Time books I wanted to finish this year (I am about halfway through the first one i.e. book 5 of the series, for the year 2 of the 10 other prose novels I wanted to read in addition to the WOT stuff (Imaro and Avenger #3 The Sky-Walker)
Highlights for January:
The Incal Jonny Quest 1-18 Department of Truth 1-4 Norse Mythology 1-3 Family Tree 1-10 Something is Killing the Children 11-13 JSA Vol. 1 and 2
biggest disappointment: Batman: The Three Jokers 1-3
still trying to decide on where the Dune OGN Vol. 1 falls. Mostly good, but there's something I can't quite put my finger on that keeps me from recommending it, and I need to read the conclusion of the arc before deciding on We Only Find them When They're Dead, it's an interesting set up but it's all going to come down to how it pays of. It wasn't quite what I expected though.
Lots of other solid stuff as there was nothing I disliked, just stuff I was more excited about than others.

biggest disappointment: Batman: The Three Jokers 1-3 There's three Jokers - how could it NOT be disappointing? One would be bad enough!

Still trying to figure out time management in the age of being a stay at home parent with kids doing remote learning. I thought I'd have so much more time and ended up with so much less. We're finally at a point where my youngest is working more independently and not having meltdowns once per hour, so I've been able to read and review one comic per day for the past week, which is a vast improvement, but this is still my lowest January ever.
total read this month: 34 total reviewed this month: 11 Best comics I read this month: Action Comics #670, Avengers #228-231, New Teen Titans #21*, Tales of the New Teen Titans #2* Other highlights this month: Adventures of Superman #483, Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16, Asterix (Free Comic Book Day 2020), Avengers #232, Sherlock Frankenstein and the Legion of Evil #1-4, Star Trek vs. Transformers #1-5, Tales of the New Teen Titans #1*, Uncanny X-Men #119* w/ Amber

I not only read it; I commented on all three parts of your podcast 😉

I read 102 comics this month. This is the first time since November reading that much and I only read 100 or more twice last year.
This month_
I read Badger ( First comics) from 13-52. I was a really fun and funny read. I found myself laughing out Loud at least once an issue. I've said it before that Mike Baron is vastly underrated . I re -read the Busiek Avengers Ultron story. Perez really drew a boat load of details in these issues. I Read the Morrison JLA issues from 6-15, it's been years since I revisited these issues and can't believe how poor the artwork was. At the time, I enjoyed Howard Porters work but it looks like Morrison never got a grade A art team for his run.

I finished the month with "69 Dude." Which is a pretty good number for me. about 2/3 of that was part of my re-read of Sandman Mystery Theatre. The other 1/3 was new stuff, though that largely consisted of three OGNs.
Found two books I'd forgotten to log. So it was 71. Bummer.

Looks like I finished January with 40.
Not bad, as I did better than many months of 2020.
Best things I read: I actually enjoyed pretty much everything I read, but I really enjoyed the Steve Englehart Avengers stuff I read. I had picked up the Scarlet Witch & Vision trade that collect the first mini-series and also threw in the Giant Sized Avengers that had them get married. As a subplot though. I gathered that I was coming into something huge (the Celestial Madonna arc I think) and while I had shades of what was going on, it really made me want to dig into the run as a whole. I can't say I've ever read a huge swath of Avengers comics, so this should be interesting.

I can't say I've ever read a huge swath of Avengers comics, so this should be interesting. This is, by far, my favorite era of Avengers. No, I neither cared for Mantis nor the Black Knight, but the energy, team dynamic, and larger-than-life plotlines were utterly endearing to me. I'm still slowly reading straight through the Avengers from around issue #80 up through #300. I'm currently in the #230s, and while I've read a lot of great stuff, the Steve Englehart stuff from that era was my personal cream of the crop.

That's funny, I usually agree with you on likes/dislikes Shax, but Engelhart just doesn't do it for me. I got a couple books from his run a couple weeks back, and after reading the western crossover, I haven't mustered the motivation to read the other two, he just bores me horribly for some reason.

I love, love, love Englehart's Detective Comics run. He's probably one of my favorite writers, just on the strength of that run alone.
But when I really think about it, I haven't read much else by him (especially his Marvel work) and that's been one of my 2021 goals.

I need to check out more of his work, myself.
