Those books were my first experience with the Turtles as well. For some reason, I only ever found Book II and Book IV when they first hit shelves. Incredibly frustrating. Mine came in a four pack, I think from Costco or Sams club or something. My grandma used to always get me comic packs from whatever big box warehouse she shopped at. They sold floppies too in big packs, of like every Marvel or DC comic published that month. That's how I got the weird stuff like Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver comics. Every once in a while I'd just have the complete run for the month I think. Probably around birthday time.

That had to have been a pretty awesome way to encounter comics.

Yeah, it did help broaden my horizons beyond Batman and Spiderman. Although I was already buying anything that looked cool out of the quarter bin at the time, the occasional comic pack from Grandma always introduced me to something new.

Just dropping to say that the new Usagi Yojimbo Saga book that Dark Horse just released begins with the Mirage series. The first storyline features the TMNT travelling to Usagi's world and helping him defend a village. It's great stuff... like all of Usagi.
I vaguely remember that my younger brother had a Usagi action figure growing up that was part of the TMNT line. I didn't know who that was at the time. I was a little sad the Saga trades are only the Dark Horse stuff... I was hoping for the whole series in a nice consistent dress.

It includes the Mirage stuff too, but yeah it skips the Fantagraphics stuff. Those volumes are still in print though, and the UY Saga HC does look nice next to my UY Ultimate Collection slipcase set.

I wish I could get a picture of the spines, but they have been designed with a consistant dress. Here's Fantagraphics Dragon Bellow Conspiracy and Circles editions:
And here's the new Dark Horse Usagi book:
Similar trade dress across the top.

One of the things that both impressed and surprised me when I first picked up the Archie Adventure Comics was how different it is to the '87 cartoon series. I had picked up this sourcebook and found that there were future versions of the turtles that didn't dress like ninjas one of which was missing an eye and they were traveling through outer space in a space ship that looked like a giant cow head.

Dark Horse hardcover of the Mirage and Dark Horse volumes on the right. It's even more gorgeous in person.

Is there a comic crossover with Usagi and the Turtles? I know he appears in the '87 cartoon and the Turtles also crossed over into other books like this issue of Savage Dragon. I'm also curious if there are any other Turtles crossovers worth reading.

Is there a comic crossover with Usagi and the Turtles? Read the above comments The only one really worth checking out, IMO, is "Shades of Green", which is the first story arc in the new Usagi Yojimbo Saga trade.

I saw this on Comic Book Men last week and thought you guys would enjoy it. Kevin Eastman shows them the very first Turtle sketch that he drew. It looks very cool! Different from what they ended up looking like though.

If you ever meet Kevin Eastman, he is exactly like he was on the show in real life. Cool dude, down to earth, but knows what he wants and what he has done is worth. Totally supportive of indy guys starting out though. Our table on artist's alley at Gem City last year was on the end of the aisle and Kevin's area was just down ways, so got to see, talk, and listen to him for the whole 2 days we did the show. Great guy, but yeah that scene is an absolute snapshot of the way Kevin is, at least in his public life.

Very cool that he wants to donate the money made from that sketch to charity. Wish I had 2 mil, that would look amazing on the wall!

Yeah this first Eastman turtle sketch is pretty cool. I also really like this early piece.
