Finally time to sit down and listen.
A bit more back-ground about issues 34 & 35, the "white supremacist breeding" issues. At the time The Aryan Nations had their world headquarters/compound in Hayden Lake in North Idaho. There was a very strong survivalist/neo-Nazi movement in North Idaho where Grell set this story. It was only a few years later in 1992 that the Ruby Ridge standoff between U.S. Marshalls and Randy Weaver happened in Bonner County which is very near the Idaho-Canadian border. So, again, he was pulling stuff out of the news and it gave him a chance to draw a different type of hunting environment than Africa. I would agree that the story was not entirely successful, but it also wasn't completely out of left field.
I absolutely agree that Grell had clearly lost interest in the book for the last 1/3 of the book. I hadn't thought about it but, upon further review, I agree that the book should have ended with issue #39.
You were thinking of Patrick Nagel as the ubiquitous artist from the 80s. And Tartanphantom comes up with it at the end.
They're cousins. Identical cousins all the way.
I think that issue #50 was the last issue I read in total in my recent re-read. The last six I skimmed out of a sense of duty. But couldn't make myself actually fully read them.
Good jobs, Fellers.
