In which we get to see how badly I embarrass myself.

I only have the first issue and the Morpheus crossover special... Y'all are going to make me regret not buying more, right?

I just noticed that we missed the short stories in Vertigo: Winter's Edge #1 & 2. Probably not a big deal but I had totally forgotten them until I went to re-read the Ennis Hellblazer story in #2.

John Watkiss did several issues of Conan the barbarian, Savage sword of Conan and Conan the adventurer. I didn't see his work on Sandman Mystery Theater, but after the initial surprise at seeing such an uncommon style, I grew to prefer his fill-in work on Conan the Adventurer to that of series regular Rafael Kayanan. I found it very moody, and very much un-Image Comics like. As you said about Guy Davis's art, his characters looked like real people.
I love Guy Davis's art... and he's a Usagi Yojimbo fan, so he's clearly a man of refined tastes!

Amber and I have been meaning to read this series for ages now. How much gets spoiled in the episode? We'd love to listen.

I'm about 20 minutes or so into this first episode and enjoying it immensely. Slam_Bradley is spot-on with his comments on Don Newton and Phantom 74, also a long-time favorite of mine. I'm going to have to bail in a minute or two (the real beckons), but I shall return. I'm going to find a collected copy of the Sandman so that I can be properly schooled when Slam begins his cross-examination and summation. Thanks to Slam, and especially to the redoubtable Crimebuster for his labor of love on these podcasts. PS: Slam,do you have a fondness for Phantom 70, featuring "The Mali Ibex"?

I've picked up most of Newton's Phantom comics over the years. That's a fun issue as I'm a big Maltese Falcon fan.

I only wish that he could have continued these kinds of Phantom stories. And published by someone who could have printed them with just a touch less muddiness.

I can assure you that Don Newton has not been forgotten by everyone. Still one of my favorite people ever to touch Batman.
Much of Don McGregor's work has not aged well, but I still adore Jungle Action for the sweeping grandeur of Wakanda and the quality explorations of ethics. Dense text never bothers me much, but I do think McGregor is often less deep, profound, and nuanced than he thinks he is.
I only know Guy Davis through his later work, especially BPRD and the Marquis, so I'm extremely curious to see his throwback approach to SMT.
I also didn't realize Matt Wagner did the writing. I still maintain Grendel is one of the best written epics in comicdom, so I really really have all the incentive I need to finally get around to reading this thing.

Don Newton is one of my two favorite Batman artists, along with Jim Aparo. A bit of Newton art not mentioned: he drew a couple of Tales of the Green Lantern Corps back-up stories featuring Ch'p.

I was surprised to hear one of you compare Newton to Adams--I think his big influence may be Wrightson. It's not as obvious because Newton usually works in superheroes, but there's a lot of it in how he handles shadows. And it's not as evident when someone else is inking him. I first saw his work in Marty Greim's fanzine Comics Crusader. Pulled this out today: I was following Sandman Mystery Theater for a while, but it hit as I was getting out of regular LCS visits. Now I want to download it from the library and dive in again.
