From DonC on CBR, of all places: Union Terminal--a former train station in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the inspiration for Superfriends' Hall of Justice--is in danger. Built in 1933, the building needs over $200 million dollars in repairs. Voters in Hamilton County are being asked to approve a half-cent increase to sales tax. Over five years this would raise $170 million towards the repair of Union Terminal and Music Hall, which I assume is some kind of music hall. Even the Legion of Doom, er, Tea Party have pledged money towards the renovations. Do the right thing, Hamilton County. Save the Hall of Justice!

There's been talk of a half cent sales tax increase out here to clean the Salton Sea, and people are flipping out about it, like they won't be able to afford whatever stupid shit they're buying because of it. If they just implemented it without telling anybody, how long before someone would have even noticed?

You would not believe what a penny sales tax did for Oklahoma City (OKC).
It happened just a few years before I moved here, but it passed and the city used the funds to turn the worst downtown area into Bricktown where the Thunder games are played. It's been a phenomenal success and I know different people from around the country who are stunned at what a turn around it was for OKC.
When it was due to expire, it went to vote about continuing it to help the public school system. It passed.
When that was about to expire, just at the peak of the Great Recession, Susan and I were afraid it would get shot down, but it didn't, and the extension is being used to build out from the downtown to the Oklahoma River with "Core to Shore".
Personally, even though there are certain things Susan and I will never, ever agree on, this is one we'll both always support : investing in the city.
