BTW, not to make a mountain out of a molehill, but I'm so curious I have to ask...what is it about animation that just isn't your sandbox anymore? You are still into video games and comic books right? I can't really put my finger on it. It just...isn't. Loved cartoons growing up. Watched Batman: TAS when I was in college. Still like a good animated movie (Pixar or otherwise), but as for 30-minute TV cartoons, the only recent one that I've really enjoyed is Gravity Falls, which was witty and weird and told a self-contained story over two seasons and then it ended. I've had no interest in watching any of the Star Wars or Marvel properties that have been done in the past 10 years, even though I am a huge fan of both universes. I like how the show started with small stakes, basically gender-swapping Cap, and has gotten more ambitious as it went. While technically animated, it is far more consistent in style and tone with the MCU movies than any typical 30 minute TV show, which I also like. The Dr. Strange episode was heavy, and Frat Thor was a great time. The Killmonger one didn't do much for me. There was nothing wrong with it, per se, just didn't click. But this week's episode, holy crap! {Spoiler: Click to show}I wasn't expecting an ongoing arc or stakes in this show going in, but it did look recently more and more like The Watcher was on the verge of intervening, and then Infinitron busts through the walls.
What a fun show and surprisingly more relevant to the MCU than I was expecting.

See, I didn't really care for the latest entry, it's not that I don't mind Ultron taking on the Watcher...it's just that I don't think we needed a whole episode devoted to that. Ultron wins isn't all that interesting, if they wanted a reason to have the Watcher assemble a Multiversal Avengers a single scene with Ultron, perhaps slightly longer than his appearance in the Party Thor episode, would have been sufficient for us to buy the threat and we could have then gotten a more interesting concept here instead.

The finale was a little lack luster, it was pretty much just one big fight scene with no real plot.

I was happy the conclusion tied in the previous episodes and made the series more of a single story, but, yeah, overall this was one of my least favorite MCU productions. Some episodes were fun, but most were hopelessly bleak, which is just not my thing. Oh well

I liked this series but agree that the tone throughout was a bit all over the place. It went from fun to dark to fun to dark but I liked how they resolved it well enough.
I forget was Gamora in the T'Challa episode? I was confused and it seemed like that showed up out of nowhere.
Still it feels like there was something missing from this series. Was there originally supposed to be more episodes?

Overall the episodes were fun I just thought the that the episodes devoted to Ultron winning and then everyone teaming up to beat him were weak. I feel like the drama that brought them all together should have been something to do with Scarlet Witch...or else nothing to connect them at all.

Some episodes were fun, but most were hopelessly bleak, which is just not my thing. Oh well In fairness, "sometimes fun but mostly hopelessly bleak" is pretty comic-accurate for a What If. I enjoyed it overall, including the finale. I liked how they brought it back together. I would have liked to see the episodes they didn't get to make. I am still just thrilled to getting so much regular comic book content of such a high standard. The worst episodes tend to be at worst "I guess that one was all right."

Rumor is that the Gamora episode will appear in season 2.

I guess at some point I may get around to watching the rest of the series, but I was so underwhelmed by the first two episodes that it's taken a back seat to a bunch of other stuff I've been watching with my wife (including the new seasons of Archer, What We Do in the Shadows and Brooklyn 99). Which is a complete turnaround from the previous three Marvel/Disney shows that were appointment TV.

For what it's worth, the tone and stakes really pick up after the second episode. Not to say you will or won't like the rest, but the first two were definitely playing it safe and easing into the concept.

What I didn't like about the last episode is that it's not a "what if..?" scenario: it's a standard multiverse scenario. Like when the Monitor assembled a group of heroes to face the first stages of Crisis on Infinite Earths.
I also have a problem with a team assembled from multiple realities when the selection is obviously driven by a desire to tell an entertaining story rather than the urgent need to solve a problem.
"Why was I chosen?"
"You're the comic relief".
"Oh... makes sense, I suppose".

While it was pretty neat that had alot of the movie actors voicing the characters, seems like they didn't quite get it. I suspect that'll be the case this time, too.

Looks fun to me, I just hope we get more one shots rather than a connected story.

Just finished the second season and over all it was fun though I think it lacked a little variety.
