Nightwing #85Written by Tom Taylor Art by Robbi Rodriguez Summary: Dick and Babs race against the clock to dismantle the Oracle system before super hacker Seer can do more damage. Plot: I know, I said I wasn't going to support the Fear State event...but I really love Taylor's writing, especially here on Nightwing, so I just couldn't stay away...and I'm glad I didn't because despite thinking the whole Magistrate controls Gotham plot Taylor did a great job of telling a great personal story with Dick and Babs. The flashback to Dick and Babs as Batgirl and Robin having a night out on the city crimefighting together was not only light and fun, but juxtaposed to them taking on the Magistrate the contrast of hope to all the despair made the reading all the better. Maybe if Tynion did more of that then Fearstate wouldn't be the dire, boring book it is. Art: I loved that Rodriguez kept the classic Batgirl and Robin costumes for the flashback, people may think the pixie boots look silly but I have always loved that design and always will.
Grade:7/10

Death of Doctor Strange #2. Written by Jed MacKay. Art by Lee Garbett.
The Dr Strange from the past explains how he set up this situation in the event of his death. The Avengers arrive as other dimensions invade Earth without a Sorcerer Supreme to guard them.
MacKay moves the story along at a good pace to keep your interest high. This issue definitely doesn't suffer from a drop off after the big events in the first issue.
Garbett's art is perfect for this story.

Nightwing #85. Written by Tom Taylor. Art by Robbi Rodriguez.
Love the interactions between Dick & Barbara. I feel this book isn't a huge part of the Fear State crossover. I don't feel it has derailed the title much.
Taylor writes such strong characters that they feel like real people. And I like that more than the action sequences. Still one of DC's best titles right now.

Superman Son of Kal-El #4. Written by Tom Taylor. Art by Daniele Di Nicuolo.
Taylor deals with fall out from Clark revealing his ID way better than Bendis' did IMO. Gamora takes advantage of knowing Superman's ID since Jon has interfered in their politics. They destroy the Kent's house. Jon saves Jonathan & Martha but the house is leveled.
As above Taylor writes strong characters and has followed through on the changes Bendis made to the Superman titles rather than ignoring them. And does a masterful job.

Thor #18. Written by Donny Cates. Art by Pasqual Ferry.
Thor has a top secret mission for Throg, the Frog of Thunder!
Thor meets with Throg to help track down the missing Mjolnir.
A nice break with some humor before the big God of Hammers arc starts next issue.
One of Marvel's best current titles.

Catwoman: Lonely City#1
This was the read of the week, in my opinion. Cliff Chaing wrote, drew, colored and lettered this great Gotham story. 10 years after the death of Batman, Selina Kyle gets out of jail. Gotham is the safest city in the US thanks of Mayor Harvey Dent and his police force. Selina's adjusting to life outside the brickyard. It's a great look at Selina that Chaing nails beautifully. A great take on all the Bat villains. In a city that has no capes, how the former villains turned out, it's a must read.

Not only was the art amazing(Chaing always looks great) but I loved the way that Chaing gave us hope among the obvious authoritarian future; he really walked a fine line between utopia and dystopia that really left me guessing. I can't wait to read more.

Anything by Chiang is a must-read.

Not All Robots #3 (AWA Studios) W: Mark Russell, Artist: Mike Deodato, Jr. I haven't been keeping up in these threads with this book (or much of anything, really) but if you aren't reading this book you need to be. Or at least buy it if it's traded. This is absolutely Russell at his satiric best. It's a near-future where robots have almost completely replaced humans in all jobs and every home has a "house robot" that provides the necessities for the home. Maybe not on par with The Flintstones or Snagglepuss at this point, but right there with Russell's work on Billionaire Island and Second Coming. I'll just drop this panel from this issue.

Blacksad: They All Fall Down #1 (Europe Comics) Writer: Juan Diaz Canales. Artist: Juanjo Guarnido Blacksad is back after a bit more than six years. This time he is in New York City and entangled in corrupt unions, city planning and organized crime. As usual this is a beautifully drawn crime noir. There's a lot to like about this. Honestly the premise isn't super original as corrupt unions are a staple of noir and we've seen city planning in as diverse sources as Chinatown and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. But Canales and Guarnido always make any plot their own. There are also a couple of shout-outs to American superhero funnybook fans, including a wolverine assassin named Logan and a character named Iris Allen. If there's a downside it's that we can't expect part two until some time in 2023. Sigh.

Made a trip in to the LCS to pick this up along with the rest of my last few weeks of pulls (Destroy All Monsters is in there too), the new Critical Role comic which both my wife and I wanted to read. This is a one-shot, and a solid read. Fills in the background on the setting and the history of the region that a large chunk of the second CR campaign is set in, while fleshing out one of the major supporting characters/sometimes ally (at least she was up through what I have seen of the Mighty Nein adventures). The art was visually very good, but the visual storytelling was merely adequate, not spectacular. The art team looked to be very good illustrators but possibly still learning the ins and outs of visual storytelling as opposed to illustration. -M
