At first glance, I thought, "what is Hulk doing in Batman?"

At first glance, I thought, "what is Hulk doing in Batman?" This one made me wonder, "what is Batman doing as the Hulk?!"

The first issue of Detective Comics I ever saw on the newsstand was I totally missed Batman in the background and thought it was a story about Klansmen who solve crimes with their own breed of justice. And it was a newsstand edition, so no helpful Batman UPC box on the bottom left either.

I no longer have that issue anymore, but I have vivid memories of that cover -- I'm pretty sure I tried recreating that cover in one my childhood sketchbooks.

Green Lantern 33 I didn't realize until I read the issue that Batman wasn't in it! I had no idea it was just a gimmick cover until after i got home!

This one isn't old enough to be a classic yet, but it's the first one that came to mind. It sure caused a lot of people to get terribly outraged about what they were absolutely certain was going to happen (but didn't) in the comic.

What jumps out at me is the boob job that MJ got right before this scene...

I've never read that Spider-Man title but tounge wrestling has never offended me.

It is Doc Ock in Spidey's body. People assumed from this cover, that Ock-in-Spidey's-body and MJ were going to have ess ee ecks, and because it was under false pretenses (i.e. Ock pretending to be Peter Parker), it would therefore be classed as rape. This is what people were absolutely, positively convinced was going to happen in this issue, because they were obviously completely unfamiliar with the concept of a comicbook cover not literally depicting what happens inside, or deliberately misleading the reader.

Was pretty amusing to watch from the sidelines of the old CBR Spider-Man forum as the outrage built. There were a lot of very angry/quick-to-anger people in that forum.

Mom bought this for me. It was all Tomahawk reprints. However, I did like a couple of the stories and I still have it.

Tomahawk reprints?
I remember when that was at the newsstands. I didn't even look at it because I wasn't a Superman fan until much later.
I probably would loved those Tomahawk reprints. I got one issue of Tomahawk where he meets a Neanderthal who's the last of his kind hiding in a cave in New England. And he has a pet pterodactyl.
