So what about characters who experience mutual attraction but never end up romantically entwined; the will-they-won't-they pairings? Good question! I'm not sure. Can you give me an example of such a couple?

I was thinking Gar Logan and Kitty Pryde, but this would also presumably count for Superboy and Lana Lang, Pat Ryan and the Dragon Lady, Dynamo and Iron Maiden, etc. Nothing to do with me, of course, but just thought I'd chime in with my thoughts on this, which are that if the couple in question never got it together then I'm not sure it really fits the "All You Need Is Love" theme. I realise that "love" is being used here in the loosest possible sense, but if a couple just flirted with each other or had palpable sexual tension between them, then to my mind it wouldn't be an in-story declaration of "love" between them. It would fall more under the category of flirtation, infatuation or lust. And I'm including the flimsiest declaration of "love" here, like a kiss or similar. It's also much harder to definitively say that these characters were "in love": it's much more open to reader interpretation. Like I say, this isn't my call to make, so please feel free to completely ignore the above. But that's my tupence worth on the subject.  |

While I see Confessor's point, I think I'm going to okay this looser definition of "couple" just to make things more interesting, the only caveat being that the attraction must be mutual and, to address 'bone's concern, never include any kind of coercion from either participant. Fair enough? |

Great idea! I was kind of hoping we might revisit "Our Favorite Comics Characters", but Kurt might be reserving that for the 20th anniversary (hint!).
As it turns out, though, I'll be including many of my favorite characters on this year's list anyway, since I quickly realized that their love interests were a big part of their appeal in the first place!

It's a fair point, but I think you can also have two characters form a strong and intimate romantic bond without ever declaring it nor acting on it physically. Oddly enough, I think we usually get more invested in those relationships in the will-they-won't-they phase than we do if/when they finally get together, maybe because it allows the conflict to be about their relationship, whereas we don't want to see conflict in their relationship once they are together. |
