Batman #118Written by Joshua Williamson Art by Jorge Molina Summary: After a night of rounding up common thugs Batman is alerted that his former comrades from Batman Inc. are accused of murder. Plot: For those who have been following along here over the years and keeping score at home it should come as no surprise when I say that I've had a love hate relationship with Batman over the last decade. Ever since Grant Morrison and Paul Dini left the Bat-office has gone from bad to worse in my eyes and although I've celebrated each changing of the guard since then...I've only been disappointed each time but with his fun run on the Flash and his recent Robin book I'm hoping Williamson is different. And it would seem I'm not alone as even DC editorial trumpeted this issue as a "NEW CHAPTER!" in big bold letters on the cover, seemingly admitting that they were aware that what had come before wasn't well received. And although this is only the first issue I have to say that my initial reaction is wildly positive, as introductions go this book very much feels like a return to form for the main Bat-title. It kept its focus on Batman, gave us some classic action beats, and set up the new direction for the title with a brisk transition. Other than the return of Batman Inc.(which I always loved!) I think there were two scenes in particular that really drew me in; the first was the opening sequence where we see a pair of lowly thugs attempting a break in only to spot Batman spying upon them from a roof top and just his presence is enough to send them running to the police to turn them selves in. It's a short scene, but it's small scale really helped hit the reset button and give the reader a classic Batman feel. Appropriately enough the second scene that really captured me was reveal at the end...Lex Luthor is bank rolling Batman Inc. in the wake of Bruce losing his fortune. It was a great twist, and the casual way Luthor walked out of the shadows and onto the scene Batman was investigating just so perfectly executed that it truly left me wanting to know more. So although it's early yet to tell, and I'm not looking forward to the fact that Williamson will eventually getting into line wide stories latter on...I am feeling really good about the title for the first time in a long while. Art: In the same way that the plot is largely a play on going back to basics the art also seems to strive to give you that classic feel. From the gargoyle like pose on the rooftop in the opening, to the chest thrust out with the cape blowing dramatically in the wind behind him "I am Batman" moment there's a lot of call backs to iconic moments from the past that are sure to be crowd pleasers...but my favorite showcase of Molina's talents was the costume party scene, not only did he give us a smorgasport of classic villain costumes through out the years, but the way he incorporated small panels focusing on specific areas with in the splash page of the whole party was brilliantly done and really gave you that huge party feel. Art: 9/10

Batman #118. Joshua Williamson and Jorge Molina.
This extra length debut issue ties up Fear State. Gives a rare peaceful interlude in Gotham. And launches us into the next arc with members of Batman, Inc accused of murder. All this with a neat twist at the end that was very cool.
Williamson is one of my favorite current writers. Add in Molina's gorgeous art and Batman has suddenly become a must buy again.

Captain America/Iron Man #1. Derek Landy and Angel Unzueta.
A former government agent... breaks out on her way to prison. Steve and Tony both have a connection to the fugitive, so they team up to track her down... but there is a bigger plot here.
I don't know what happened to the Capt America ongoing. After it ended we got a 5 issue mini series now this. I don't mind a team up between the old Tales of Suspense heroes. I'm just happy to see Steve as Cap. Hopefully this series will showcase his heroism, leadership skills and overall integrity.

Superman Son of Kal-El Annual 2021. Tom Taylor and Steve Pugh.
Basically Jon's first meeting with Lex Luthor. And Luthor underestimates Jon...
Taylor continues to nail the different character's voices and make them feel authentic. Jon "wins" this round against Luthor just by doing something different than his father.

Devil's Reign #1. Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto.
Wilson Fisk went from Kingpin to mayor of NYC and is going to use all of his criminal and political power to destroy the super heroes who call NYC home.
Similar to Civil War but with an interesting twist that Zdarsky uses from previous DD series.
Zdarsky has been great on DD. Looking forward to this arc.

Archie's Holiday Magic Special 2021. Cover by Gretel Lusky. It's Christmas Eve in Riverdale, and it's time for the annual Snow Ball, but as usual Archie can't decide who should be his date: Betty or Veronica? A spirit guide helps him navigate these questions, and explore his past, present, and future in three all new tales. This holiday issue is similar to the classic holiday stories like It's a Wonderful Life. Love these Archie specials. Timeless. 3 great all new stories highlighting the big 4. Nice Christmas stocking stuffer for any comic book fan.

I have this pulled, too, and I was looking forward to starring a Cap and an Iron Man that I can get behind, but with a writer I'd never seen before, I was worried.

Well he does portray Tony as a bit of a jerk. I'm buying it because I am more of a Capt America fan

Pick of the week: One-Star SquadronMark Russell is one of the most interesting and engaging writers out there. His DC books, particularly his run on Flintstones and his Snagglepuss mini, are incredible reads. Here he brings his take on modern heroes in the age of social media and capitalism. Trying his best not to go all Giffen, Russell takes Grade C to Z list heroes with Red Tornado and Power Girl into a pliable business. It's very smart and funny rather than Bwhahaha. Steve Lieber, who I've loved since Whiteout, shines here like he did Superior Foes of Spider-Man. It's a great mix of comedy with a story unraveling into something bigger than heroes helping out getting cats in trees, being at bar-mitzvahs or doing Cameos. Other reads this week: - Crossover #10 - Fantastic Four: Life Story #10 (another Russell goodie) - The Good Asian #7 - Dark Knights of Steel #2

Thought I'd start with the books no one else reviewed yet:
Dark Knights of Steel #2 : Looks like we're going to have a big 'ole superhero rumble.. with the 'House of El' on one side and the 'Kingdom of Storms' (which seems to be all the other superheroes) on the other, with the Amazon either a 3rd side or in the middle. The character concepts are pretty fun, and seeing Jefferson Prince in a veryT'Challa like role is interesting, but I'm feeling less excited about this now that it's going.. I'm not sure it's going to offer up anything that hasn't been done a bunch of times before, but we'll see. Sticking Supergirl and Lois Lane with the Amazons is a bit unique... we'll see how it goes. Fantastic cover, incidently (the cover I have is a very angry Wonder Woman, painted)
Frontiersman #3 : I think I'm officially sold on this book. Y'all should get it. By design, we seem to be doing a 'bad guy of the week' thing, introducing us to the world and providing some action while the main story moves along. There's some politics in there, but I don't really see a particular side being presented... in fact the character have different views an they're all in there. Sure, the hero is the enviornmentalist, but still. This week's character (who once again has a profile in the back) is Trefoil... a sort of 'what if Steve Rogers gave up on the American ideals' character... who I love and hope we'll see again.

So I was actually disappointed in One Star Squadron .. just didn't do it for me. First time something I read by Mark Russell and didn't really like.
Captain America and Iron Man was decent... Tony was kinda off? But maybe it's just because I'm used to him being written like MCU Tony. Kinda fun to see some random Initiative heroes, too.
Green Lantern was very write-for-the-trade decompressed... I'll stick with the finishing this story line, but barely... just taking too long to get to wherever they're going.
Devil's Reign seems like it will tread familiar ground with new faces in the forefront. Kinda on the fence... I'll at least get the next issue and see how it goes.
