Swamp Thing: Green Hell #1Written by Jeff Lemire Art by Doug Mahnke Summary: At the end of the world a new avatar of the Green has been chosen and he's not taking humanity's abuse of the planet well. Plot: On paper this book really should have been a slam dunk for me...but instead it was definitely a whiff. In general I love horror comics, I love end of the world stories, and I love just about everything Jeff Lemire's done (even his prior run on Swamp Thing)...but this just felt too grim and gritty for my tastes. Before you destroy something you have to build it up, but from start to finish its just one brutal tear down after another which takes away any element of shock or horror those scenes could have otherwise had because you don't know who the characters are so why care if they're being terrorized? I did like the ending with old man Constantine resurrecting the original Alec Holland Swamp Thing to fight the Green's new more brutal protector...but at that point I think it was a little too late to really keep me interested. I might try the second issue if it comes out during another light week like it did this month, but sadly its not something I'm pining for. Art: More than just missing out on Swamp Thing, what is really too bad is that despite the one note plot Mahnke's hyper detailed art was as fantastic as always. His style is just perfect for horror comics with the realism he brings to his human characters and lush back grounds lending is gross out monsters an incredible sense of realness they wouldn't otherwise have. If I do pick up another issue of this it'll definitely have more to do with wanting to see more of Mhnke's creature work than the plot itself. Grade:6/10

Not totally sure if these were this week or last week, but...
Action Comics 1068 : The Warworld story is dragging a bit, but it's moving along. I'm not sure the premise is legitimate.. would a beat down Superman REALLY give a race of Gladiators hope? But it certainly give good feels. The Martian Manhunter backup is clearly a love letter to the characters history... and Zook? We'll see how that goes.
Robin #9 : I'd rather see Damian as a loner... he's not Dick Grayson. The story works though. Not sure I get where they're going next, but the whole tournment had a nice ending... definitely worthwhile a read.
