What the heck was up with the microphones for movies and TVs from about the mid-60s to late '70s? I'm talking about the prominent clothes-rustling. Watching just about any drama within this range, it sounds like they have microphones stuffed directly inside the actors' clothes. You can close your eyes and still know when an actor shifts position because you'll hear their clothes rustle. Was this an artifact of the technology, or was it one of those inexplicable artistic fads?

I know nothing about the technology, but I’ve noticed the same over-amped sound, too.
On “Columbo” reruns, you hear every step everyone takes as if it’s a peal of thunder. You hear the crunch of every pebble when a car comes into a driveway, even the scratch of a pen across a piece of paper. If you focus on the noise, it’s all you’ll hear.

It's not the sound that the on-set microphones are picking up, it's the sounds that the Foley artist is adding in post production. And yes, back in the 60s and 70s, Foley was much cruder and was applied much more "enthusiastically" than in the modern era. Read more about foley here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foley_(filmmaking)

It's not that prominent on things I have watched. I suspect it may have to do with modern stereo tvs and digital tech either amplifying the original analog mono recordings or something related to any enhancement process when the program was digitized.

Never noticed this before. But now I'm sure I will.

Yeah, I'm with codystarbuck on this one; I haven't really noticed it at all, and I agree with his point about the newer tech, both in terms of our souped-up TVs and. esp. the formats used by streaming platforms.

This reminds me of a couple of things: The disclaimer on the Monty Python's Flying Service DVDs. "Now in glorious digital DVD format so that you, the digital aficionado, can enjoy the original scratches, pops and hisses with crystal clarity". Filming "The Dueling Cavalier" in Singin' in the RainAnd the disastrous preview thereof
