Nightwing #89Written by Tom Taylor Art by Bruno Redondo Summary: When a former member of Teen Titans is murdered in Metropolis you just know it will lead to a meeting of the new World's Finest. Plot: I haven't been a fan of aging up Jon Kent, having preferred him to be Damian's age in the Super Sons...but if he's going to be older he should be written like Taylor did here because the way he interacted with Dick Grayson here was pitch perfect. In much the same way that I love Dick and Damian's brotherly relationship the way he mentor's Jon here worked really well and was a fun dynamic that contrasted well with the way Bruce and Clark see each other. On top of those fun relationship moments the book contained some of the funniest dialog I've seen in comics in a long time. I seriously laughed out loud while reading "Dick, there's a robot petting your dog." when Kelex came to ask Dick to check on Jon, and then again in the very next panel, " Mr. Grayson, you dropped this. Fast. In my direction." when Dick reflexively attempts to defend himself from a surprise robot visitor. Both lines were just so quick and snappy and I just loved them. I think my only real complaint is that I wish the Titans getting killed were heroes I actually knew. I know, I know comic deaths are dumb but if you're going to do it make it count. Other than that though Taylor continues to knock Nightwing out of the park. Art: I love the little touches(like the black and red suit) Redondo brought to the flashbacks here showing us visually that those scenes with Jon clearly in the past. I just love the energy and joy that Redondo brings to each panel in this book, it's just so unapologetically light and fun which is a real breath of fresh air these days. Grade:8/10

Thor #22. Donny Cates and Nic Klein.
Thor vs the altered Mjolnir, now the God of Hammers part 4.
The Avengers and the FF try to help Thor. However Thor uses his powers to isolate himself to protect them from Mjolnir's wrath. However there is no way he can overcome Mjolnir by himself until Odin helps him as he lies dying from Mjolnir's attack last issue...
Marvel's best current title continues to be awesome.

And now DC's best current title:
Nightwing #89. Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo.
Wow. Taylor continues to astound me with his work on Nightwing. From the flashback with Superman, Batman and Jon to the current scene in Dick's apartment with Babs... Taylor just gets all the characters "voices" perfect.
And add Redondo's beautiful art to the mix and you have a great book.

Sword of Hyperboria #2Written by Mike Mignola and Rob Williams Art by Laurence Campbell Summary: After years spent in a tomb the sword is found again and passes into new hands in Imperial Germany! Plot: While I was hoping to see more of Howard the Barbarian in this story it seems that the actual hero of the title is the sword itself with the narrative following the sword through it's long history. While a more anthology like feel wasn't what I was expecting from the title this exciting second installment has won me over proving that wherever the sword may be found adventure is sure to be found. While we've seen a little action during WWII in Hellboy in the past this was the first story to really touch on WWI and I loved the use of a Serbian monster the Volstak and her identity as the new character Graf Ling de Gotha in this story, especially as a spy. The way the story played on her asian heritage against the back drop of colonialism in Imperial Germany was really interesting and I'm excited to hear that she'll get further development in future stories. Art: As it is in every book that Campbell does we really got some killer visual storytelling here. I loved how with out a single word Campbell was able to draw a line from this branch of the Heliopic Brotherhood of Ra to the one that goes on to become the Knights of the Silver Star that we see later on in B.P.R.D by using the painting and iconography of Lazod. It was a tiny touch and likely lost on more casual readers but for long time fans like me it was a beautiful easter egg. Grade:10/10

Some of these might be from last week.... Animal Castle #3 : The plot to rebel against Silvio ad his dog generals is under way...I suspect there might be some blood shed next issue. I'm not sure I'd call this a 're-imagining' or Animal Farm, perhaps more of a variation on the theme, but it's very good. Cloaked #3 : A bit of the mid-series blahs here. I get it... the more they investigate, the more people get killed. Lets ge to the good part now . Usagi #26 : The conclusion of last month's Crossroads story. Definitely made me happy to see not just Jei, but the peasant Woodcutters that seem to manage to wander parallel to Usagi so frequently. Hellboy: Bones of Giants #4 : A bit of a rushed ending, I thought. I feel like alot more could have been done, but not sure what. Definitely not as good as the promise, but maybe I just don't like Hellboy.

Some Marvel stuff... Devil's Reign continues to be meh... I want to hear about the Mayoral campaign (Wilson Fisk vs. Luke Cage) and Purple Man being used to win votes.. that's far more interesting that the redux of Civil War they're focusing on, and I really just can't get excited about multiversal Ottos in other heroes bodies.. too silly. I'll read the end since I'm pulling it, but I don't think I'd recommend it. Moon Knight was even able to overcome being stuck in a crossover to give us a cool one off with Hunter's Moon... he seemed a little to good here, compared to his earlier characterization, but otherwise very good. Secret X-Men was fun and didn't take itself too seriously. No idea if the Shi'ar plot was important to the overreaching story or not, but I was just happy to see Sam and Berto together again

Last couple things...
Nightwing was a bit disappointing to me, but that might be because I had sky-high expectations. It was also painful to see younger Jon, knowing that character is a bit gone now. The flashback sequence was great.. but the main story was a bit weak, I thought. And are we still killing off random characters to prove a threat is legit? I did like Dick talking to Jon about the mask and secret identities, that was pretty cool. Hopefully the 2nd half will be better.
Green Lantern Was just alot of big splashy shots of random characters getting zapped by the big bad guy, then God John Stewart coming on the scene. I'm hoping this story has some sort of decent conclusion. The art was good, but weird. And can we decide what size Jo Mullein is.. I feel like she either gains or loses 50 pounds every issue.... I thought she had a pretty unique look in Far Sector, but that seems to be heading toward being the same look and body type as every female superhero, which is sad if that's what they do.
Billy the Kit continues to be a weird but fun western.... not sure it's going anyplace plot wise, but I'm ok with that. Space Bastards was seemingly some side stories that would fit in before the series.. they were fun.. the first one especially, but it hasn't really captured the magic like it did when Darick Robertson did the art.
