Day Seven ChoicesPut your slippers on and grab that newspaper, it’s Strip Sunday! Are Bill Watterson or Berkeley Breathed in your top 10? Does this question scare you into leaving spots open for later? Watterson, yes, absolutely! A true master of the medium. I like Breathed, but he doesn't even come close. So my list is up to four: Kirby, Barks, Gilbert Hernandez, and Watterson.

Does this question scare you into leaving spots open for later? If we are including comic strip guys then, yeah, that changes the complexion of everything. Bill Watterson - Absolutely top ten. One of the two best humor strips ever. Berke Breathed - close. Very close. But probably just outside the top ten.

I've hit this problem before. I can't do a list of both comic book and comic strip creators. My criteria are too different. As I've already started with comic book creators, I'm just just going to pass on the comic strip creators.

Agreed--they served different demands, thus their intentions and results were also very different from the other. That said, if I had to be forced to vote on the selections of Breathed and Watterson, my answer is no to both. I can think of other comic strip talents who would have no problem leaping to a "catch all" top 10 list, and were far more transformational to the genre (arguably). My top ten list so far: John Romita Sr.

I have a separate pantheon of newspaper strip creators. There are a few crossover creators who worked in both fields (Eisner and Frazetta come to mind immediately), and some whose work transcend field to make my pantheon. If I am considering just my pantheon of strip creators, both Watterson and Breathed make my top tier and Watterson is definitely in my top 10, but neither make the crossover into my overall pantheon of creators I am using to adjudicate my choices for this thread.

I made my list based on comic books only, so while Watterson would be high on the list, adding strip artists would change everything.

Throwing strip creators in changes everything. And considering panel cartoonists is another level of difficulty.
My lists of this sort are always very fluid anyway, so it’s fine. But it’s definitely added difficulty.

I could mix newspaper creators when it comes to the adventure based ones (Hal Foster, Alex Raymond, Burne Hogarth, etc.), but not the funny stuff. And I'm even going to pass on doing that because the top 10 is already getting hard enough for me.
As cartoonists, the 2 mentioned today were at the top of my list back in the 80's. Not so much stuff I've gone back to enjoy though, more just fit that time and place for me.
My list so far: Kirby.

I think this is a bit of mixing apples and oranges, but I definitely have these two on some top ten list of mine!

They are two top cartoonist but I've never been a newspaper strip consumer so it's no for both.

Yeah, I'm gonna go with the consensus here and just say that I'd rather not mix comic strip guys into this (and for what it's worth, I'll just add that I've always preferred comic books to newspaper strips). If we're just talking about strip creators, though, Watterson would definitely be in the top 10. Breathed, no. But generally for the purposes of this discussion, it's no to both.

I do not mind putting newspaper strip creators in my top ten, but I would vote no on both creators regardless (though I do enjoy their collections, they are not my favorite newspaper strip or comic creators).

Well, if we're going to differentiate between comic books and comic strips, then I'll just have to create a Top Ten for each:
Comic Books: Barks, Beto Hernadez, Kirby Comic Strips: Watterson
Cei-U! I summon two sides of the same coin!

Love C&H but would not put any comic strip creators on my list.
