Day Nine ChoicesLet’s talk about Legends today. Like Mike Mignola. Geof Darrow . Walt Simonson. John Byrne . Art Adams . Paul Chadwick. Mike Allred. Dave Gibbons. And if you’re bummed you didn’t have Frank Miller on, here is your second chance! I want to know if any of these creators who were part of Dark Horse’s Legend imprint are in your Top 10. I was wondering when Byrne would come up. Yes, absolutely, #1. My favorite artist almost since I began reading comics (picked up my first one of his at age 7) and a great writer as well. Simonson, also yes. Geof Darrow and Paul Chadwick, don't know enough. I like Mignola's art and enjoyed some Hellboy, but not a top 10. I love Arthur Adams' art and have a signed print of his on my wall but he hasn't done enough to be considered a top 10 creator.
Gibbons is good and of course there's Watchmen, but other than that I've only seen Doctor Who. I can't call someone a top creator for one book. I hate Allred's art.
I hate his art too.

It hits some kind of uncanny valley for me and I have a visceral reaction to it.

Mike Mignola — Yes. Yes, yes, yes, yes. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES.
Geof Darrow — Not familiar with his work.
Walt Simonson — I really like his style, but get back to me after I've read his Thor run.
John Byrne — Yes/no are in quantum superposition. He was an amazing illustrator up until the mid '90s, when he became incredibly hit-or-miss. As for his writing, it's always been mostly mediocre, with only very brief moments of high quality. Star Trek: New Visions might've made for a quaint one-shot, but proved the nadir of his career when he made it an ongoing series. As for him as a person, he's a tremendous asshole, and that's me refraining from the more apt colourful metaphors.
Art Adams — He's good, but goes too far with the cheesecake.
Paul Chadwick — Star Wars: A Valentine Story is one of my favourite SW comics of all time. Unfortunately, it's one of the only Chadwick comics I've read.
Mike Allred — Not familiar enough with his work.
Dave Gibbons — Good, but not a favourite of mine.

Mignola: No. Haven't seen that much but not a huge fan, though now and then I see an individual panel or sample that I like.
Darrow: No. Seen even less of this artist. I like the high level of detail in his work, but haven't seen enough to feel strongly about it.
Simonson: No. My favourite is an early work, the old black and white Tales of the Hyborean Age in Savage Sword of Conan. I liked his Orion too, have never read his most famous work, the long '80s run on Thor.
Byrne: No. Love early stuff, Iron Fist and X-Men, but that wouldn't put him in my top ten.
Art Adams: No. Like his style, but nowhere near enough to make my top ten.
Chadwick: No, seen very little, but I thnk I remember like the few online samples I've come across.
Allred: No. I have a couple of his books but haven't read them yet. Sometimes I like his style, other times its self-aware, ironic attitude rubs me the wrong way.
Gibbons: No. Love the panel design of Watchmen, layouts and internal arrangement, but the actual art itself feels a little stiff and plain to me.

Day Nine Response and Wrap—Up
Concrete is on my top ten titles list, but not enough output from Chadwick to make my creator list.
John Byrne might make it if I ever read and love his Marvel stuff. I loved his Superman, and some of his independent stuff, heck, I even kinda like his current Star Trek fumetti.
Mignola a big old yes for me. Love Hellboy, and all of his art.
Art Adams, Gibbons, and Darrow would probably all be in if it was for art only.
Simonson is maybe top 20, especially if I ever finish reading his Thor run.
Allred is close, and (broken record time) could be higher if I ever finish reading all the stuff of his on my “loved the first issue/story so bought it all and still waiting to finish it” list.
My list so far: Frank Miller Jack Kirby Carl Barks Alan Moore Mike Mignola

Day Ten Choices Some always have G.I. Joe on their minds, maybe especially the animated series.
Today I’m asking if any of these writers or artists who worked even a day on the OG cartoon are on your top 10 list: Steve Gerber, Russ Heath, Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Gerry Conway, Denny O’Neil, Roy Thomas, or Marv Wolfman.
Didn’t know they worked on it? Well now you do!

No to all of them, although a few fall into my ever-growing 'close but no cigar' category, mainly Gerber, Thomas, Conway and Wolfman.

Didn’t know they worked on it? Well now you do! Yes to Roy Thomas for all his creations for Marvel and the great writing for the titles when he took over as the main man for Stan Lee. Yes to Marv Wolfman for his TOD, Teen Titans , Deathstroke , FF , Spider-man and more that he wrote and Transformed. Conway and O'Neil just miss and the rest no.

Denny O'Neil and Marv Wolfman get a Yes without a moment's hesitation.
Roy Thomas is a provisional Yes, although he is the most likely to get bumped in favour of someone else. If Kurt Busiek pops up, he'll probably nab Roy's spot.
Bruce Timm and Paul Dini would be really close. Definitely Top 20. (BTAS is my favourite animated series of all time.)
Heath is a great artist, but there is no real personal attachment for me, so that's a pass.
Gerber has never really done it for me. I'm more of a DC guy.
I like Conway, but he is not Top 10 material in my opinion. His ideas are often better than their execution.

None of them would make my list. (Surprised that Larry Hama never worked on the cartoon, he was heavily involved with the franchise after all).

I'm not very familiar with Timm or Dini. I was a fan of Batman: The Animated Series growing up but never read the comics. I can't really consider either of them for their work on the show. I haven't read much Heath but would very much like to. In general, Golden Age and 50s stuff are the biggest gaps in my reading. I haven't read much Eisner, for example, or any EC comics.
I'm a big fan of Roy Thomas' Conan work, and I like his Avengers run as well. I am struggling through All-Star Squadron and probably won't make it to the spinoff titles. I've read bits and pieces of his other work. In general, I think he's an excellent writer, and played an important part in bridging the Silver Age to the Bronze Age. A bit wordy at times, and his ideas weren't always a success, but if you're as prolific as Thomas was, your output is bound to be a mixed bag.
Conway and Wolfman I think of as solid working pros. If I picked up a book with their name on it, I'd trust them to deliver a solid story. Wolfman had at least two runs that I love, Tomb of Dracula and New Teen Titans. With Conway, I'd struggle to point to his best run. Perhaps Amazing Spider-Man.
Denny O’Neil is my kind of writer. I have a lot of time for Denny O'Neil. I don't mind my heroes being dragged through the mud, and I like that hardnosed, gritty, "street" aesthetic. His best work is on The Question, but I like his Batman, Daredevil, and Iron Man stuff too. The Green Lantern/Green Arrow run is a tad dated these days, but you can't deny what he was trying to do.
Not a fan of Gerber. I like his Defenders run, and bits and pieces of his other work. The biggest problems I have with him is that I don't find his humor funny, have little interest in the politics he's exploring, and don't like the way he incorporates himself into the stories as author/auteur. A lot of the satire is very 70s, and much of it is done better in films from the time. Having said that, he was groundbreaking in the way he incorporated an almost underground aesthetic into mainstream comics. I totally respect him for that.
No one makes the list, but I'd happily go read a Thomas Conan or a Denny O'Neil story, and explore some Russ Heath, so these creators have merits in other ways.
