Emily Carroll:no.
Alex Toth: no, but in the top 20.
Harvey Kurtzman: No, but he was an incredibly infuential talent of some the greatest of all illustrated publications, but even with that credit, he's another in the top 20.
Charles Burns: no.
Jim Aparo: no, not top ten, bur easily top 20. Between his work at Charlton (on The Phantom) to his brilliance at DC on the best version of the Spectre ever published, and being the only artist of the period who could follow in the massive, character re-defining shoes of Neal Adams with Batman, Aparo was a great, always welcome sight. There's few DC characters he could not improve with his talent (Superman being one of them).

Day Thirty-Two ChoicesOkay guys today I wanted to comic with a mixture of flavor even tho I kind of fear what’s left in lists is more vanilla but today I want to know if Emily Carroll, Alex Toth, Harvey Kurtzman, or Charles Burns are on your list. I also am targeting a couple of people and wondering if Jim Aparo makes your list? And here we go. Alex Toth - So close, but not quite. Certainly top 25 Harvey Kurtzman - Yeah. I have to include Kurtzman. He bumps Tim Truman. I've never read anything by Charles Burns and I've never heard of Emily Carroll. Jim Aparo - I really love Aparo. But not Top Ten. Probably top 25 though. Top Ten (Comic Books): Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Carl Barks, Darwyn Cooke, Warren Ellis, Will Eisner, Garth Ennis, Ed Brubaker, Wally Wood, Harvey Kurtzman Top Ten (Comic Strips): Walt Kelly, Bill Watterson, Berke Breathed, Gary Larson, Milton Caniff, Bill Mauldin, Al Williamson, Charles Addams, Herb Block, Stan Lynde.

Robert Crumb – No.
Alex Toth – Another of those revered creators I have little familiarity with, unfortunately. The only story of his I recall reading was "The Stalkers" from Creepy, which was gorgeously illustrated. He's definitely someone whose work I need to dip more thoroughly into.
Harvey Kurtzman – No.
Charles Burns – Ooh, I'm not sure. I love his luscious inking style, but still ... I've gotta ponder this one.
Jim Aparo – No.

I'm crazy about both Toth and Aparo but not so much that they'd make my list. Burns is good but really not my thing. Never heard of Emily Carroll.
Top Ten (comic books): Carl Barks, George Carlson, Robert Crumb, Will Eisner, Gilbert Hernandez, Walt Kelly, Jack Kirby, Harvey Kurtzman, George Perez*
Top Ten (comic strips): Milton Caniff, Roy Crane, Fred Gottfredsen, George Herriman, Walt Kelly, Gary Larson, Charles Schulz, E.C. Segar, Cliff Sterrett, Bill Watterson

Day Thirty-Two Response and Wrap—Up
Still need to read some Emily Carroll, webtoons are largely a blind spot. Update! Ordered one of her books, Through the Woods, and started it last night. Gorgeous and hauntingly gothic stories, I’m in for whatever she does next.
Love me some Alex Toth. The cartoons he designed were foundational to my youth, and they were given new life with the often brilliant shows of Adult Swim. I love the comics work of his that I've found, but most of it was before my time. So as much as I love his work, it's mostly animation for me, I'm just too young and too broke to have enough of his comic book work to make him ‘eligible’ for my top ten there.
I'm ashamed at how little of Harvey Kurtzman’s work I've read. I’ve heard him referred to as the Orson Welles of comics, and while I'm slowly watching and loving Welles’ work, I still need to read most of Kurtzman’s.
I started Charles Burns’ Black Hole and loved it, but got distracted and it’s buried somewhere near my bed.
I like Aparo’s art a lot, but as I age I lean towards more stylized or unique artists.
I stand at 9. Frank Miller Jack Kirby Carl Barks Alan Moore Mike Mignola Jeff Lemire Bernie Wrightson Matt Wagner Will Eisner

Day Thirty-Three Choices
Speaking of X-Men one of my nominees today had some mutant cred for sure in a mix of a group. I'm also going to see if anyone likes some people that I usually view now more as commission people than comic artists.
Today I want to to know if Paul Smith, Adam Hughes, or Jeff Scott Campbell are in your top 10.
For the writers out there let's also throw in Peter David and Steve Engelhart.

No, though I went through an Englehart phase after his Detective run and through his GL work with Joe Staton.

Paul Smith: no.
Adam Hughes: no.
Jeff Scott Campbell: no.
Peter David: no He had his moments, but he's not even in the top 50.
Steve Engelhart: Despite creating one of the best Captain America arcs ever published (the return of the 1950s Cap and Bucky / trying to explain their appearance in order to fit Marvel's then-continuity), which was the height of his powers as a writer, he's not in the top ten.

I'm a big fan of Paul Smith, but he's not top 10. Englehart was a favorite of mine as a kid and young adult, especially his Avengers and Doctor Strange stuff, but like some other creators fell in my estimation as I boradened my comic horizons.
David, Hughes and Campbell have done some stuff I liked and some stuff I didn't, but are nowhere near favorites.
My ten still stands complete with Moebius, Kubert, Canniff, Raymond, Eisner, Smith, Sakai, Toth, Cooke and Frazetta (with one more honorable mention who hasn't been nominated yet).

Would love a volunteer or two to put together a manga theme day. I’m not versed at all in Japanese comics, and plan to do nothing more than throw out a couple names and make it another wildcard day. So if one or more of you want to help give manga it’s due and come up with a nomination slate/post, please PM me.

I like most of them, but not Top 10 material. I used to like Peter David's work, but these days it just annoys me.

Emily Carroll does web comics, I believe. That's any area I've yet to dive into, but her work looks interesting. I'm keen on the idea of getting into Alex Toth's work, it's just a matter of where I should start. I read MAD magazine as a kid, but it was decades after Harvey Kurtzman had left. EC is an era of comics I've yet to dabble in, and if I read any of his Playboys it wasn't for Little Anny Fanny. I totally had Charles Burns confused with Chester Brown in my head. Jim Aparo was a fabulous artist. I haven't really gotten into any of the runs he had, but he stuff always looks classy.
I always get excited when I see Paul Smith's name in the credits, but to be honest, none of the stuff he's done outside of Uncanny X-Men has really set my world alight. I love Adam Hughes, but AFAIK, he wound up becoming more of a cover artist and illustrator than a comic book penciler. Love his early stuff. Never read Jeff Scott Campbell.
I'm a big fan of David's run on Hulk. Haven't read much else from him outside of some of his X-Factor and Spider-Man work. Englehart was one of the best comic book writers of his era. I went through a period where I read all of his famous runs.
My list so far: John Buscema, Gene Colan, Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez, Dan Clowes
