Sword of Hyperborea #4Written by Mike Mignola and Rob Williams Art by Lawrence Campbell Summary: The Sword arrives in Chicago and tempts a young musician to sin in order to have success. Plot: I probably should have dropped this one a while back, this was really one of the most disjointed books Mignola's put out in a while. Previously the only other Mignola book I had dropped was The Visitor but what kept me going here was the amazing art by Campbell. I just don't get what went on here, the sword somehow got to a Chicago chapter of the Heliopic Brotherhood of Ra and a rip off of Robert Johnson stops them for some reason. Who is the demon who made him a talented guitarist? Why does the demon want to take down the Heliopic Brotherhood? Was it the sword giving him the talent? It's not clear, nor is it clear how it gets to the end with the future frog people who descend from Abe. It's just hollow and muddled and gives us nothing. Art: Lawrence Campbell is as awesome as always, I'm just sad his excellent art is wasted on such a worthless book. Grade:4/10

Is anybody reading The Trial of the Amazons?
Chapter Five was in Wonder Woman #786, which just came out today. I haven’t read it yet.
But I’ve enjoyed The Trial of the Amazons so far! The first four chapters, I mean.
One of the few “big event cross-overs” of the last five years that I’ve liked.

I've heard good things about it at the Shop while picking up my books, I may have to pick it up when it gets collected.

Radio Spaceman #2Written by Mike Mignola Art by Greg Hinkle Summary: The Spaceman rescues the intrepid archaeologist only to see a giant beast unleashed! Plot: Between Sword of Hyperborea, Bones of the Giants and now this I really feel like Mignola has completely forgotten how to pace a story.Radio Spaceman maintains the fun pulpy adventure feel that made the initial issue so promising but this was a story that seriously needed at least one more issue to unfold its story. The whole ending bit with the alien vampire queen and the archaeologist who just randomly turned into a werewolf/ another vampire just came completely out of left field and ended the story before it had a chance to begin. We desperately needed more characterization of the Spaceman and tons more for the archaeologist and Vampire queen in order to make the fight land. I'd definitely be down for more adventures of Radio Spaceman in the future but I hope if more do come there is more mind put towards character and plot development. Art: Despite a very rushed and unsatisfying ending Greg Hinkle's art continued to be stunning. Whether it was the Spaceman bashing frog monsters with a giant hammer, a giant monster fight or a vampire brawl every panel was beautifully done. It was big, bold and fun from start to finish and you can't ask for much more than that. Grade:6/10

Batman '89 #5
Batman '89 screenwriter Sam Hamm and artist Joe Quinones take the Burton/Hamm film and continue to explore more of that era's Gotham. It's fun and dark but pure nostalgia.

The art is what keeps me coming back, the story's only just okay. Still, I'm glad Hamm got to bring his idea to life.
