Creepy #1-17 and Eerie #1-11 are the key early ones. Goodwin leaves after the last issues cited and the reprints begin. (Also, Blazing Combat #1-4 came out during the same period and is just as worthy of collecting.)

Not the 60s? Or do they not show up affordably?[/div I actually own all the '60s ones because I'm a completionist like that, but the big return to original content occurred in late 1969, so I just use 1970 as a more convenient "rounding-up" of sorts. In my mind, the post 1969 stuff is far more enjoyable than the early material published under Goodwin, even before the arrival of the Spanish artists in 1971. I forgot that there was a fair amount of Doug Moench in there, including "The Slipped Mickey Click Flip," my introduction to Corben and the first Warren story I read after three or four years away from them. Things certainly were different from what it Creepy was before.

If you have access to the Hoopla service through your public library, most of the Creepy and Eerie creator collections and archives are available to borrow and read, so you can sample as you like without risk. I believe the Vampi stuff is there as well, but I am not sure.

I admit the completist in me is intimated by the sheer volume of Warren reprints. What I have been buying are character-themed (El Cid, Hunter, Pantha) and artist-themed (Alex Toth) collections.

I love the El Cid stories. I'd like to see them do a Gonzalo Mayo artist collection but perhaps there isn't that much material apart from El Cid.

Not sure if anyone is still talking here, but I have a pretty complete collection of everything Warren ever published (excluding the Famous Monsters of Filmland title)--and I collect the original issues rather than the hardbound archives. My Vampirella collection is especially beautiful.

My Vampirella collection is especially beautiful. Hi Axe Elf and welcome!! I'm sure there are others here who might chime in who know the Warren material better than me (lots of diverse interests in classic comics here), but that cover looks awesome. Sounds like you have a pretty sweet collection, good to have you here!

I maybe shouldn't have posted a Vampi in this thread--unless we can consider it open to all things Warren? Or should we start a new thread for the depths of the Warren rabbit hole? I call it the Warren rabbit hole because a warren is a place where rabbits live--a warren is literally a rabbit hole. Anyway, most of my books are raw, but in keeping with the actual title of the thread, this is my one and only professionally graded Warren:

The Warren Mags are so much fun to collect. Sure, it's economically logical to buy collected editions or even to access them free online because the copyrights have lapsed, but those covers are half the charm. I couldn't imagine getting rid of my three boxes worth of Warren mags. Welcome to the community, Axe Elf!

those covers are half the charm. Oh absolutely. Many of the issues with a Frazetta cover are at a premium compared to other issues.

Back in the late 1990s or early 2000s, when I first started buying back issues of the Warren mags, I came across a complete collection on ebay for I think around $400, something like that. But at the time I thought I would save myself some money and look for only those specific issues with favourite artists that I remembered from the few I had read back in the day, so I took a pass on it.
Of course what happened was that once I started looking at a few issues I realised there were a lot more good artists that I'd thought, first-rate creators I hadn't known about or didn't remember, so I ended up buying near-complete runs of all three mags bit by bit and thus probably spending more than I would have done if I'd bought that complete collection in the first place.

I realised there were a lot more good artists that I'd thought Yeah, I was surprised to find that Steve Ditko and Neal Adams contributed to some of the early issues. And of course a ton of others through the years--but those are a couple that you don't think of as typical Warren artists.
