CAPTAIN AMERICA: SYMBOL OF TRUTH #1. Written by Tochi Onyebuchi. Art by R.B. Silva.
Sam Wilson stars in another solo series as Capt America. I love the character of Sam. I have mixed feelings about him as Cap. I almost feel like it is a demotion in some ways for him. He has a great ID as the Falcon that is unique. Being Cap it just feels like he is a copy that can fly.
Having said that I still loved this issue. It is uniquely Sam and had some great flying sequences as well as action and "quiet" moments.
Hopefully Steve's series will be just as good and we get 2 quality Capt America series.

HULK VS THOR: BANNER OF WAR.
Banner of War: Part 1 of 5 - Written by Donny Cates. Art by Martin Coccolo.
Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of both characters. This five-part crossover between the THOR and HULK series starts here and is continued in THOR #25 and HULK #7.
Cates does a great job recapping his stories in both series for any new readers. There is also a nice 2 page spread showing prior Hulk/Thor fights.
We get into the action fairly quickly and see a brutal fight ensue but Cates has a neat twist to this slugfest...
We get a second conflict between a Hulk character and a Thor character that has never been seen before.
I love Cates' run on Thor but haven't enjoyed his Hulk. This story may change my mind about his Hulk series.

SUPERMAN SON OF KAL-EL #11. Written by Tom Taylor. Art by Cian Tormey.
The Good: The amazing talk between Batman & Jonathan Kent (Clark's Dad). This is what Taylor excels at. Making these characters iconic yet "real". When Clark's Dad admits to talking to Alfred regularly before Alfred was killed... amazing. But he then goes on and tells Bruce they bragged to each other about their "sons" and how proud Alfred was of Bruce. And when Bruce argues with Clark's Dad about Jon being too trusting Clark's Dad has the perfect comeback. Who already raised one Superman? I loved how he put Bruce in his place with one sentence. I also like Bruce's respect for Clark's Dad.
The Bad: I'm just not a fan of the ongoing story that has been going on this past year with Bendix being the villain. I want it to be over. I also REALLY MISS the family aspect. With Clark absent from the book and Lois barely there part of what made this title different is gone. And I think if Taylor doesn't return to that soon the book will fade away in the next year.

I haven't gone in to pick up this week's stuff (I usually pick up monthly) but one of the features of Comic Hub is it tells me what is in my pull file, and since I cleared in on Saturday on FCBD, I know what books from this week are waiting for me, so I am going to note them and review them when I eventually get out to Superfly and pick up this stuff...

I'll let y'all know what I think when I get them. Maybe with this Comic Hub feature I can actually participate in these threads, because normally, picking up books monthly, I have no clue which book came out which week and trying to figure that out to participate is more trouble than its worth for me.

Moon Knight: Black, White and Blood #1
Contains 3 short stories:
"Anubis Rex" by Jonathan Hickman & Chris Bachalo
"So White, Yet So Dark." by Murewa Ayodele & Dotun Akande
"The End" by Marc Guggenheim & Jorge Fornes
What Happened Before: Ha, nothing. You don't need to know anything, these are stories that are probably out of continuity (one of them certainly is) with creative teams that are free to do whatever they want with it (as long as they keep the colour palette to White, Black and Red). Giving creative teams a shot at a single standalone story to showcase their ideas worked well for other properties, will it work for Moon Knight?
Just for people who never have even heard of Moon Knight: Marc Spector was a mercenary. On one mission, things were going too far and Marc refused to kill innocents, so his employer turned on him. Left for dead, Marc was resurrected by the ancient Egyptian God Khonshu to protect the innocents (or he had a near-death experience and Khonshu is all in his head. Different creative teams have had different takes on Moon Knight, Khonshu and Marc's alter-ego's.)
Plot: In the far far future, Moon Knight protects the Priestess of Khonshu against a cult of Ra, the Sun-God, in a time where the stars are going out one by one (Anubis Rex).
Spider-Man assists Moon Knight in tracking down Egyptian artificats that can be misused. ("So White Yet So Dark")
And in the final story, Moon Knight tries to protect an accountant who wants to testify against her Mob boss. ("The End").
The Good: The art is good in all three stories (I know a lot of people don't like Bachalo, but I do). I liked the art in The End the best.
Also: Bill Sienkiewicz cover: nice!
The Bad: Storywise, it's kinda underwhelming.
Hickman is mostly a sci-fi writer, so I was wondering how he would fit with Moon Knight. Answer: by turning it into a sci-fi story. Concept is ok (I really like the idea of a Sun God seeing the future where the stars go out and realizes that in the end, he will lose his fight with the night),but the few pages are too little to really tell a story. Moon Knight does not get much personality beyond being violent to his enemies and antagonistic to the young girl that he's protecting. The Priestess of Khonshu is a young girl that shows empathy to her opponents, even though they murdered her family, but again too short a story.
Ayodele tries for a more funny approach, but I didn't find it to be that funny (it's not tasteless or anything, just kinda obvious where he was going with this). Again something that may have needed a bit more than was given here.
The End worked the best of the three stories, though it relies heavily on its gimmick (the story is told backwards), otherwise it's a plot that we've seen many times before: hero must defend an innocent who has evidence against a big criminal so they can get to the courthouse safe and in time. Big criminal hires assassins to kill the witness.
Overall: I really like short stories (Elmore Leonard was amazing at them and made very good points how short stories can showcase a writer's skill.), but in this case the short format hurt all 3 stories. I'm still getting the rest of the series, Grendel's Black/White/Red (in various order depending on which series you had) used the same format and I loved those mini's, so maybe next issue will be more to my liking.
