Detective Comics #1060Written by Mariko Tamaki Art by Ivan Reis Summary: As more Gotham citizens commit baffling crimes before turning themselves in Batman narrows in on the Riddler's involvement. Plot: The newest Riddler mystery continues in this final arc of Mariko Tamaki’s run, and although I don't think it will be my favorite Riddler story of all time it's a satisfying read. Although I disliked her Gotham tower "event" I really am sad to see Tamaki leave because she has been so good at providing deep and interesting characterization not only to Bruce Wayne but also in the new supporting cast she has surrounded him with like Gotham Gazette reporter Deb Donovon and now her daughter Judge Carolyn. And while I've long loved Deb and her armature sleuthing, Bruce taking an interest in her daughter is an fun development that will sadly go unexplored as her legal back ground would be a great juxtaposition with his extra-legal vigilante actions. What is really great though is that I haven't cracked the case yet, which isn't something I can say for a lot of comic book mysteries. Is the Riddler aiding Batman through his podcast...or is he behind the crimes? The green numbers the citizen criminals suggest the latter but that could easily be a red herring. Either possibility though could be interesting and I'm really looking forward to seeing it play out. Art:About the only thing wrong with Ivan Reis’ art is the hipster redesign for Riddler, which still looks incredibly goofy. Otherwise, Reis’ art is as impeccable as ever as he channels intense emotions from his characters and lays out the pages in an effortlessly cinematic style. Grade:7/10

Hellboy and the BPRD: Night of the Cyclops Written by Mike Mignola and Oliver Vatine Art by Oliver Vatine Summary: After battling a Minotaur Hellboy follows a talking goat to a village cursed by Aphrodite and becomes their savior. Plot: This is a story I've greatly been anticipating since it was first announced as despite the vast depth of Mignola's explorations of world mythology in Hellboy he's rarely touched on Greek mythology which has always been a favorite of mine. However, while it does feature Hellboy tangling with a Minotaur, a giant Cyclops and even Aphrodite it's not the deep dive I was hoping for. While there are certainly mythical elements the story itself is more akin to the slam-bam stories of Hellboy's early years, where Hellboy would literally fall into trouble, punch the monster, almost get beaten only to win nearly by luck. It's a kind of story with a fun energy, don't get me wrong, but after all these years I was hoping for something more thoughtful like we've seen in Mignola's later stories. That slight disappointment aside though I really loved the story Mignola did weave here, while the pieces were familiar( a jealous Aphrodite cursing a rival) the story seemed original as I can't find any references to a story where Aphrodite turned a village into Satyrs after her son refused to force Aelita to marry Silenus and yet although original it truly felt authentic which is no small feat.
Art: I've never seen Vatine's work before but he has a cartoony style that fits Hellboy's world well. If you're squeamish about nudity you may not enjoy his take on Satyrs, but personally I thought they were both tasteful and beautiful.
Grade:8/10

The redesign on the Riddler is ... well, lets keep things in perspective! It's better than the Riddler in the recent movie!

My Favorite This Week:
HULK #7. Banner of War: Part 3 of 5. Written by Donny Cates. Art by Martin Coccolo.
Tony in a Celestial Hulkbuster armor enters the fight but he did not factor in that there is a second struggle going on between Banner & Odin.
Cates takes this epic battle adds new twists and we see Hulk's rage "explode" with high levels of gamma radiation... high enough to do this...
transform Thor into a Hulk!! So far this Hulk vs Thor fight has been stellar. I'm really enjoying it and hoping Cates nails the ending.

Some Quick Reviews:
DETECTIVE COMICS #1060 Written by Mariko Tamaki. Art by Ivan Reis.
I have enjoyed Tamaki's run on Detective overall although I wasn't crazy about the recent 12 part weekly series. And really anything with Reis' art is a must buy. I agree with thwhtguardian . I'm not crazy with this "new" look of the Riddler. Hopefully he will return to his more classic look soon.
ROBIN #14. Written by Joshua Williamson. Art and Cover by Roger Cruz.
Another part of the Shadow War crossover. This crossover has been OK. I just want it to be over and have Robin return to being the star of his own book again.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #2. Written by Zeb Wells. Art by John Romita Jr.
While this is some of JR Jr best art this story has me feeling underwhelmed. I will be getting the title thru #900 (issue 6 in this volume) and then I will decide to keep reading.
GUNSLINGER SPAWN #8. Written by Todd McFarlane. Art by Brett Booth.
If you had told me one of my favorite current comic books would be a western themed Spawn spinoff title I would think you were crazy. But issue after issue Booth has delivered some really good art with surprisingly decent storytelling from McFarlane. It's really an odd mix of horror and westerns and Spawn/Image but it works! It started off with a neat concept that I thought would get old very fast but it still holds my interest.
DEVIL"S REIGN OMEGA. The aftermath of the recent 6 part Daredevil series Devil's Reign.
3 stories setting up a new status quo for 1. Daredevil & Elektra. With a funeral for Matt Murdock (who was really his brother Mike). DD & Elektra decide to take on the Hand and take their fight beyond NYC in next month's new Daredevil #1. 2. Luke Cage as Mayor of NYC. 3. A new Thunderbolts series.
Overall I liked the Devil's Reign series and am looking forward to a different direction for Daredevil & Elektra. I also like the idea of Luke Cage as Mayor of NYC.
MOON KNIGHT # 11. Written by Jed MacKay. Art by Alessandro Cappuccio.
Moon Knight and his allies vs Zodiac. In order to win Moon Knight needs help...from Khonshu.
Building to next month's conclusion of MacKay's first incredible year on Moon Knight.
This has been a great series issue after issue. Love it.
