Not going to make it into the shop this week, but Comics Hub tells me I have 2 pull books this week-Frank Frazetta's Death Dealer #5 and Midnight Suns #1.

Castle Full of Blackbirds #1Written by Mike Mignola and Angela Slatter Art by Valeria Burzo Summary: After running away from Hellboy, Sara May makes her way to a school for witchcraft and discovers a mysterious destiny.
Plot: After reading this issue, sadly I think Castle Full of Blackbirds might just join Mignola's The Visitor in the ignominious ranks of "books I'll never finish." It's a strange misstep in my mind, even if we've seen it before, the premise of a secret school for witchcraft is interesting but there was zero build up of the character of Sara May either in this book or its predecessor The Return of Effie Cobb. Without a strong central character to care about the danger she faces or the mysteries around her. It's a shame, but I doubt very much I'll be back for #2.
Art: Sadder still is the waste of Burzo's art, it has a fantastic storybook quality to it that's just beautiful to behold but there isn't enough story for it to tell.

Predator#2Written by Ed Brisson Art by Kev Walker Summery: Thetha treks through a frozen wilderness in search of supplies to fix her ship when she unexpectedly encounters a Predator.
Plot: Brisson continues his fun matinee revenge story as Theta struggles against the elements, thieves and then even a new Predator. This is a book with a quick pace, fun action scenes and just enough tension at the end to give it that blockbuster movie feel. And while I really enjoy the idea of a Predator survivor going out for revenge, I think it was slightly diluted by the addition of another alien species. So far it's just been Predators, Aliens and the more mysterious pilots with humanity barely knowing any of them exist but here we got some thuggish aliens that waylay Thetha and not only does she not seem surprised by them...but they speak English. It wasn't a terrible development by any means, but it did make it slightly more cartoony where as most Predator books while definitely over the top in the macho-action sense have still felt rather grounded. Still and all this remains one of the better Predator storylines I've read and I'm looking forward to more.
Art: Walker continues to really deliver that cinematic feel to his art. His smooth style is incredibly engrossing and really makes you feel like you're watching a movie.

BATMAN vs ROBIN #1. Written by Mark Waid. Art by Mahmud Asrar.
This series continues events told in the first arc of the new World's Finest series and Robin's recent series. From inside Lazarus Island the Devil Nezha has been set free. Nezha has supercharged magic users and it has dangerous & unpredictable consequences. Damian has become "possessed" by Nezha while Bruce is haunted by the return of an old friend.
The Good: It continues some of Waid's excellent first arc on the newest World's Finest series. It also "fixes" what I consider a HUGE mistake made in the Batman titles a few years ago. It also features some wonderful art from Asrar (who returns to DC from his Marvel work on Conan!). Plus there is a lot of small moments in the story that made me smile. One example the return of the Bat Boat. There were some nice cameos. Plus each issue is double sized so there is a lot of story in each issue.
The Bad: I'm not really crazy about yet another Bruce vs Damian (father vs son) story.

While I liked Alfred coming back I was just really turned off by Damian trying to kill Bruce. Sure, he's possessed by the demon(and he might not even be the real Damian as Mother Soul could have grown this one from Damian's heart) but we've seen this kind of story before and Damian has grown past that. I was really hoping that despite the title Waid would have kept the light hearted tone he had brought to Worlds Finest. It still might end with a more fun adventure style tone, but as a first issue it was a let down in that regard. |

Plot: As a big fan of Strange Academy it was really fun to see that as the focal point for this new venture into Marvel's supernatural corner. While we haven't seen much of the threat our heroes actually face it is an interesting gathering of heroes with a team made up of Magik, Blade, Agatha Harkness, a Native American Ghost Rider called Spirit Rider...and Wolverine. The last addition is a slightly odd choice as Logan isn't a supernatural character so it felt a little like Marvel wasn't sure this book would interest readers without an "A-lister" That aside what little we did see looked like a set up for a fun ride and I'm hoping we see some of the weirder corners of the Marvel Universe as the book continues.
Art: Zagaria does well to establish a strong horror tone but with a mix of fun as well which is a hard task to balance. What I really enjoyed was the way he handled the horror set pieces in the prophesy, the gloom and darkness had a pervasive mood that I really enjoyed and I'm excited to see what he does going forward as the book progresses.

I agree the art was pretty great. (especially the two page splash with the split Damian), but nothing else about this story is good. This seems like it should be a Titans level bad guy at least. Also, WHY BRING ALFRED BACK!?!?!? Let the man rest in peace and tell some different stories. Evil Damian after all the great character progression (brainwashed or not) it lousy. But hey, no one mentioned Tim Hunter made an appearance, that's fun! Not sure why he's a kid again, (He was definitely in his early 20s in his last series I think), and he was pretty wasted (he just through lightning bolts at Batman, which was weird and ineffective) but hey, nice to know he still exists in the DCU. |

I disagree about Alfred though, not sure this is the best way to bring him back but I loved the character and he shouldn't have been allowed to be taken off the board the way he was. |
