I was able to hit Newbury Comics for FCBD during a break at work
Free ones, I grabbed Futures End, Hello Kitty (for the 9 year old), and Showa: The History of Japan, which I didn't know about it looks really interesting.
I picked up 2 10 comic grab bags for 2.50 each, one Marvel and One Indy... Turned out to me mostly stuff I don't have, and included the GotG Angela Skottie Young Variant, which I'll check on eBay
Also picked up the Golden Age Starman hardcover for a very nice 14.99, which should be great for background before I get too far in the Robinson run

I s'pose this counts. There's a hardback of Milligan & Pulido's Human Target: Final Cut which I kid you not has been sitting on the shelf at the back since it's debut, like, 12 years ago. I was in there today for FBCD natch, and just couldn't take it anymore. Could provide an excuse to seek out the whole Milligan run, as I never finished it.

There's another "What are you reading?" thread floating around. But it's a bit longer than the one I merged, so I'm going to leave it for now.

Well, I think I did Free Comic Book Day wrong, because I ended up basically spending a pantload of money. Longtime Archie artist Jeff Shultz was on hand. For those of you who haven't been reading Archie - and shame on you! - Shultz has recently been doing a series of great variant covers for both Archie and Betty and Veronica. These have mostly been riffs on classic art from the 40's and 50's, including a cool Norman Rockwell tribute, a "Casablanca" style movie poster and Betty and Veronica take on the "We Can Do It" WWII propaganda poster. Some really cool stuff. My favorite, though , was his version of the painting Nighthawks, which featured Archie and Jughead eating at Pop Tate's. This was the cover for Archie #649. Well, turns out he still had the original art to it, and it was for sale. I was surprised, as I was sure someone would have bought this up right quick a long time ago. I asked how much and he seemed embarrassed by the asking price, as a friend had convinced him to jack up the price form his usual price for cover original art. Compared to non-Archie original cover art, though, it was still a total steal and I just had to have it. So I bought it. Here it is, the published version along with the original art, which is now on display here in my home office: Here's a closer look at some of the detail:

Went to FCB at the LCS today with my wife and 2 daughters (they're 8 1/2 and just-turned 6). They each grabbed the Archie Digest, Hello Kitty and Smurfs, while I picked up the Guardians of the Galaxy and Rocket Raccoon books.
The cool thing the owner of this LCS did was give away free Marvel Essentials to the first 100 people 18 and under, in an attempt to introduce them to the hobby; he had some pretty decent offerings in there, to be honest. My younger daughter didn't want any of them (they were "too heavy"), so I grabbed Captain Marvel volume 1 for myself on her behalf, but my older daughter was drawn to Marvel Team-Up volume 3, because, in her words, "it's Spider-Man...with someone else...in every story." The back cover of the book has Spidey and Cap squaring off against Batroc and Abomination, and she actually recognized both of the villains on her own without any help. When I went in her room just a little bit ago, it was sitting on her nightstand, indicating that would be what she will be reading before bed tonight.

Went to FCBD today, hit 3 stores. The first one was CRAZY busy, as usual, but it's the store where they have all the free books and you can take as many as you want. I got a ton of free books, and their back issues were 50% off, but it was just too crowded, so I got two new comics and left. (I feel bad taking free books without buying). Then I went to a store 500 meters away and got 4 more free comics, and they had 30% off HC. I got the Maximum minimum wage for 25$ Canadian. Just discovered this series with the new one on Image Comics and I love it (one of the few monthly I get with Alex + Ada, Thrillium, Black Science and Zero).

That's a great idea by the comic store owner, and awesome that your daughter is reading one... warms the cockles of ones heart, it does.

Hooray for team-up books!
I got some free comics and the "Pretty Deadly" trade from Image - I decided to give most of the Image first-volume-for-ten-bucks a try - it's not making much sense to me. I keep trying to read it and not really retaining any of the information.

I TRIED FCB yesterday, at a bigger comic store, but the line wrapped around the building, and I was more interested in the 25 cent boxes than FCB, but even the 25 cent boxes were not worth the wait in line just to get in the store. So, I went to my LCS, which wasn't quite as crowded, but I had to pick up my subs anyway, so I picked up a few freebies for my son. I'm really sad that I had to give up the 25 cent boxes due to the crowds because the 25 cent boxes only happen once a month, but I just couldn't wait. My sons both had school activities yesterday, and we were on a schedule. Even if I had been willing to wait, I couldn't.

After volunteering at my LCS for Free Comic Book Day, we ran out of comics at 5pm. Had well over 1200 people come into the store and participate. I just pick up my regular pull list stuff, my 5 Free Comics (plus a couple others) and helped cleaned up. We had a great turn out.
We all cleaned up the shop and the outside and we all drank ourselves silly.
No time for sketches, no time to take advantage of the 25% off trades and back issues (including Silver Age).... its alright. Was fun
