It’s the most I’ve ever spent on a comic ... by a lot! I won’t be getting any other old comics for a while! I might work on 1980s Wonder Woman. My Detective Comics #25 is slabbed! So I’ll be asking advice on the best way to get the slab off without damaging the artifact. Then I’ll read it a few times. And then I’ll get it slabbed again.
Too bad it's a Detective #25 and not a Youngblood #1... if it were the latter, you could just shoot it with 00 buckshot to get the case open, and any damage to the book would probably actually improve it. I mean, all the characters inside already had their feet shot out from under them, so where's the harm?

Here's how to crack it open.
Bear in mind you'll be voiding the grade when you do it.
I've got several friends who bust open their slabs....but their intentions are different.

Something about the theory of over 45 year olds buying most of the silver/ Bronze Age collected editions sounds off. How many of the older fans still exist in this hobby as opposed to the younger comic fans ? As far as I know , no one has charted the demographics and broken it down. Sounds like there’s no way to know how many true fans of comics are still buying them. Digital sales are still a mystery as they are not included in the final tally.

Copying and pasting from a post I made over in my Star Wars reviews thread... I got the third in IDW's series of Marvel Star Wars-related "artist's editions" delivered today. This most recent volume features the early 80s work of Walt Simonson and Tom Palmer. Unlike the two previous volumes, this one actually features a number of complete issues reproduced via high-quality scans of the original artwork at actual size. It's an absolutely beautiful book, as all of these artist's editions are. Looking at Simonson and Palmer's original art at actual size and being able to examine all the intricate details -- and all the little corrections and changes they made too -- is utterly fascinating, especially as I already know these pages and panels so well.

Hey, Mister Spaceman ("won't you please take me along...") and badwolf , I misspoke earlier. I just checked my first print editions of the Fantastic Four omnibuses and, actually, the trade dress/formatting of the spines has changed every time. Sometimes only subtly, but twice not so subtly... My first three FF omnibuses look like your Vol. 3.
I never noticed the difference between 2 & 3 (on other omnis) until now.
I don't have any at all that look like that Vol. 1.

My FF Volume 1 is a first printing from 2005. If memory serves, I believe that was the first omnibus that Marvel ever put out.

Yep, not old enough to be in my 40s yet...

I got it already. I guess when you spend that much on a comic book they send it overnight delivery. I call it the artifact. I need some alone time with the artifact.

Anyone hitting FCBD? I’m having fun doing my usual and trying to track them all down. My wonderful wife accompanied me to two stores that allowed ten each with food bank donation, so that knocked off 40 of them. Have a few coming thru DCBS, and my main store allowed 6. I mostly skipped the huge stacks of Marvel and DC ones, figuring I can find those after today.
My main store is also having a 30% off back issues sale, and has put out a lot of new stock recently. They have 100s of long boxes of back issues.
I found the complete run of the old CrossGen series Ruse for $1 an issue, so 70 cents times 26. Why not?

My local shop (Super Fly Comics and Games) has no limit on how many you can get, so I only made one stop at a comic shop today, picked up my pull, got what I wanted of the freebies, and picked up a handful of D&D minis taking advantage of their storewide sale 25% off everything). The only other stop we made was at a local game store that was having a grand reopening under new ownership (the employees pooled their resources and bought the store when the previous owner of nearly 30 years decided to close up shop), where Mrs MRP spent a ton on gaming stuff, but no comics. -M

I cracked open the slab with my Swiss Army Knife.
My Detective Comics #25 is listed as 3.0, so it’s all there. Two-inch spine rip at the bottom but the staples are firmly attached. Off-white pages. The cover has lost its luster. But it’s firm enough to read without worrying about it falling apart in your hands.
But, honestly, owning this book, I think I finally really get slabbing. But only for comics that cost as much as this one. This comic is more than eighty years old and it needs to be protected.
I’m hoping to get a nice protective case for it this week and eventually get it re-slabbed.
Now, as for the content.
I read it all last night and I actually really love it! There’s an awful lot of Golden Age material that is hard to read, but you read enough of it and you get an appreciation for what they were doing. (Or trying to do.) And you start to enjoy the quirks and peculiarities of each separate feature.
(For example, I love Whiz #1! (Or #2, I guess.) I read the giant reprint from the 1970s and I love it.)
And I really liked Detective Comics #25.
So I’ll be reviewing all the stories. One by one. I want to read them all again and take notes.
I’ll probably put my reviews in my Batman thread.
Starting in a few days hopefully.
