Just picked up the X-Men: Dark Phoenix saga as reprinted in the Marvel Ultimate Graphic Novels Collection in an RSPCA shop for a measly £4... I've never really been a big X-Men fan, and have read very few of their comics. But at such a cheap price, and given how famous this arc is, I thought I'd give this a whirl. I like these Ultimate Graphic Novels editions: they use really nice paper-stock, have copious notes in the front giving lots of behind-the-scenes info and bringing you up to date with "The Story So Far", and the colouring isn't too bad either.

I put a low bid on a low-grade copy of Detective Comics #248 and I just found out I won it for $24.50.
It’s not that low grade. There’s no pages missing, there’s no coupons out, the cover and the centerfold are attached. It’s just kind of beat up. Well, we’ll see how it looks when I get it. At this point, it looks like a pretty good deal.
This is the issue where the cover shows Batman and Robin on a gondola in a Venice canal because reasons.

I ordered a copy of Superman Family #206 off eBay.
I bought Showcase Presents: Supergirl, Volume Two, a few weeks ago, and I’ve been reading through it slowly. Last night, I came across the return of Lesla-Lar, the one where she frees General Zod and some of the other Phantom Zone criminals and they go on a spree of mischief. Said mischief includes a scene where they are testing the efficiency of some forbidden Kryptonian weapons, and Lesla-Lar gets the short straw and is disintegrated!
😮
General Zod and his buddies just laugh it off!
I was thinking I’d heard somewhere that she eventually gets better and comes back, so I looked it up and ordered Superman Family #206 to see the conclusion of what looks to be kind of a long Supergirl saga from about 1980.
It’s a big bonus that Lena Thorul and brother Lex are in the original story in Action Comics from the 1960s.

I forgot to mention that I ordered Detective Comics #246.
I saw it on eBay for only $40, so I went ahead and ordered it last week. After I ordered it, I realized it was the first appearance of Diane Meade! I love her so much! She is hilarious!
It came last night, and it’s pretty beat-up but it’s all there. The spine is pretty beat-up but the cover is still attached at one of the staples.
And it’s the first appearance of Diane Meade! I now have all of her Silver Age appearances except for Justice League #7.

I went to a con for the first time on over a decade on Sunday, C2E2, and made a dent in my Wanted list:
Batman 366 (Joker) Marvel Premiere 46 (Man-Wolf, by Perez. Bought it because I liked the True Believers edition of 45 well enough, and this is the 2nd half of the story) Wonder Woman 232 (WWII era, with JSA members) Adventure Comics 430 (Black Orchid) Berni Wrightson: Master Of The Macabre: 2, 3, and 5
I bought Swamp Thing 52, and this was meant to be the final Batman-related comic off my list (along with Batman 366 mentioned above), but the darn thing never made it home. I lost it at the con somehow. I'm scatter-brained and I know it, so I always double and triple check that I never leave anything important behind when I leave an area, like car keys, wallet, and comics that I've been hunting for years. Still not good enough. Oh well...
I also picked up a bunch of Truman's King Conan single issues. Five more to go to collect 'em all.
Knowing that these cons have been trending to include more non-comics pop culture stuff than I care for, I was getting worried when I made it half-way through and only saw a couple comics vendors, so I started picking up some stuff just so I wouldn't go home empty-handed. So I bought some cheap copies of stuff I owned before, thinking "was it really that bad?". Yes, the Chichester Daredevil really was that bad. But I'm not getting rid of them this time. Now I can answer that question again in twenty years without spending any more money. I also got the Spawn Blood Feud mini, but haven't re-read it yet. After making these desperate purchases, I then ran across the comics vendors section proper, where I was able to make the happy purchases at the top of this post.

Went to a flea market Sunday and looked more than I bought, but did find this: It's a 1970 reprint, but 20 pages of Alex Toth for $3. Considered, but didn't get, a pack of Chick tracts: A toy dealer who tends to price high just got these in: 30 (he said--I didn't count) stripped DCs. He wanted $90, which I wasn't going to pay. If he has them next time, I'm thinking of counting and then offering a buck a book.

Good luck!
