Not a classic, but I needed this issue to complete the 12 issue mini. Now I can read this entire series.

Had a good time at the Grit City Comic Show on Saturday but my printer was acting all wonky that morning so I had to go without my want list. Still, I didn't do too bad for flying blind.
First, I picked up a short stack of Marvel magazines:
Bizarre Adventures #27 (X-Men solo stories by Cockrum, Perez and John Buscema)
Howard the Duck #1 and 9 Kull and the Barbarians #1-3
as well as several mid-'80s mini-series:
The Shadow War of Hawkman #1-4 X-Men/Alpha Flight #1-2 X-Men Vs. The Avengers #1-4
and, just for the hell of it, I bought a copy of EC Classics eprinting Frontline Combat #9 (the all-Civil War issue) and Two-Fisted Tales #1. But my real score for the day was a somwhat batered library copy, complete with dust jacket, of Batman from the 30's to the 70's for a measly $10.
I also picked up three nice figurines of the Silver Age Superman, Batman and Robin in the same scale as my Justice League PVC set.
So all in all I'd call it a good day at the con. Would you agree?
Cei-U! I crave your validation!

New old comics day! UPS just dropped this small batch off. First up, I collect (classic era) Betty Kane cover appearances, so very happy to land this Batman. The DC Special has a Supergirl story reprint I wanted a nice reading copy of, but also a previously unpublished Golden Age WW Cheetah story, so that intrigued me as well. I also love "the girls are taking over!" theme on the cover. Here are my takes on what each male character in the background is saying... Flash: "Girls...ugh!" Batman: "Girls? It...just might work!" Superman: "Girls?...I don't get it." Green Lantern: "Which one of you lucky ladies wants to go on a date with handsome Hal tonight?" Next up, love the 70's era groovy Catwoman costume, another theme I collect. The Space: 1999 issue was due to me binge watching my DVD's of the series, I always loved that show as a kid. Sandwiched between classic Star Trek and Star Wars eras, it never remotely approached their levels of popularity, but I always thought it was a very intelligent series with a great cast. A young John Byrne handled the art chores for this issue, and I think he did terrific. The aliens and backgrounds in particular are superb. And it looked like the assignment was to draw the characters as closely as possible to their actual actor/actress likenesses, which he did a fairly decent job of here. That stood out to me a bit as he was known for "lookalike" faces often during his career, but again definitely some versatility here. Last, some classic Shogun Warriors and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Shogun Warriors is another childhood memory from the toys, and seeing the FF show up was irresistable to me. Raiders of the Lost Ark is obviously just a movie adaptation, but I have to say I really like the John Buscema pencils with Klaus Janson inks. The only problem is the coloring is a little too bright to match the feel of the movie itself. Granted there were more limitations back then from a printing standpoint, but I still think they could have dialed it in a little darker. Still fun though, and an overall enjoyable batch of new issues.

Picked up a bona fide grail of mine last week: Marvel Premiere #10... I've been after this for years at an affordable price, and I finally got it for a steal in amongst a job lot of Dr. Strange comics that I already owned on eBay. It brings me another step closer to having the whole Steve Englehart run of Dr. Strange, and I'm pleased to report that this is another great issue from that run. Marvel Premiere #10 is normally waaay pricey, as it's the first appearance of Shuma-Gorath. My copy is in nice condition -- probably a VF -- and I regularly see it going for anywhere between £150 and £350 in the UK in that condition. I got mine in a bundle for just £50, which in itself is a great price for this issue alone, but I plan to re-list the other Dr. Strange comics that I already own on eBay, so hopefully I'll make some of that £50 back, thus making what I've paid for this issue even less. Really pleased to finally have this in my collection, and for a price that didn't destroy my wallet.

Detective Comics #247 came in the mail yesterday.
Have you ever seen that Robot Chicken sketch where it turns out that Batman is afraid of bats?
Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff did it in 1957!

Also in Detective #247 ...
Roy Raymond suspects that a mechanical bloodhound is a fake.
Casey the Cop thwarts a pawnshop burglary.
And the Martian Manhunter has to stop some criminals who are using a fireworks factory as a hide-out!

Alright, away we go... the first part is a lot of 70s era Marvels that I owned as a kid pre-high school. I have been slowly recreating that collection this year, and my dealer friend just got in a large collection of mostly reader grade 70s Marvels (though some are still in the VF range), so since I had trade credit coming, I jumped on a bunch of these... As I have said before, Avengers, was my book of choice as a kid, so I had a lot of Avengers issues, here's more of them now reacquired... Other books I didn't have a lot of, here's one of only a couple of Daredevil issues I owned as a kid (side not, when I got into "collecting" comics in high school, I momentarily thought I had lucked into the first Miller Daredevil as a kid, but I was wrong, the covers to 148-which I had-and 158 were uncannily similar and offered a moments confusion) one of only 4 Defenders issues I had as a kid (I now have 3 of them again, #50 is the only one left to get) and one of a short, 3 issue, run of FF I had managed to pick up as a kid... three of the 4 Hulk issues I had as a kid (if you don't count Marvel Super-Heroes reprints)-note the presence of Jack of Hearts, he was in a lot of books I had-see Iron Man) Speaking of Iron Man, he was one of my early favorites (maybe because I wanted to have my own suit or armor to be a super-hero as a kid, and maybe because I was big into knights in shining armor as a kid, I'm not sure). I had a bunch of random issues then wound up getting a print subscription through the magazine drive my Catholic elementary school was running-the funny thing is, I didn't understand how subscriptions worked for comics, I thought you could pick out 12 different comics to get and Iron Man happened to be the one I said first, so that got checked off on the order form. If I had understood how it worked, I would have picked Avengers, but oh well, I enjoyed those 12 issues of Iron Man, and well they featured a lot of Jack of Hearts too. I got a good chunk of those issues back in this batch (though the 112 here isn't a double cover like my subscription copy was). Speaking of knights in shining armor, the cover to Iron Man #102 is still one of my favorite covers of all time I only need a couple more to knock off the sub issues I had. Luckily, the only real expensive one is #118 (1st Rhodey) but I managed to get that from Crimebuster in the Dollar Bin Challenge last year. That's it for the childhood Marvel portion of the haul. More in the next post. -M

The rest of the stack is a mish mash off stuff. I picked up a handful of 70s Mar-Vell issues, I didn't have these issues, but I had several around them so they fill in missing chunks of story I have had since I was a kid... I also picked up an issue of Fanfare for a $1, I am slowly working to complete that series as nearly every issue has some kind of wonderful surprise from an artist I admire (back-up, pin up, back cover, etc.) Speaking of artists I admire, I got this Darwyn Cooke Jonah Hex cover for a buck... and I couldn't pass up another copy of this Dave Stevens cover for $1, I have one already, but I am incapable of passing on Stevens covers for $1 another duplicate I picked up for a buck because of the cover (and its an upgrade on my copy, which I had trouble finding in decent shape at a good price when I put this run together because its a bondage cover) was John Carter 11..., my copy was detached at 1 staple, so this one will replace it... I got some random "Indy books" including a Gulacy cover for Black Diamond, and a handful of Dragonlance issues for my D&D related comics collection... and the last bit is filling in some holes in my run of later Justice League of America run-I have most of the run in Silver Age tpb collections of omnibus editions, but have most of #200-261 in single issues, but these fill in many of the remaining holes I had in that run... and that's that. Unusually super-hero heavy for me again, but any time I work on recreating the childhood comics, it's going to be super-hero heavy... -M

Awesome pickups, @jaska ! Heck, I'm excited for you! Thank you sir! I'm just playing the day back here, but man, Confessor posting his grail find (I'm jealous, I'd love that issue), Batflunkie tempting me to pick up that Killraven trade (I've almost pulled the trigger like 5 times), Hoosier X scoring another sweet classic era issue of Detective, and @mrp pretty much hitting the Bronze Age motherload...dang, there's some good reading acquired this fine day!
