Joe Staton's E-Man is a great, offbeat book. The earlier Charlton run was fun as well, but I love the First Comics run. For me, the Charlton run of E-man is the gold standard. The follow-up series and one-shots are fine, but nothing beats those original ten issues. Also, I find the satire in the initial issues in the First series, scripted by Pasko, a little too heavy-handed sometimes. He lacked Cuti's light touch.
Point well taken. In both runs, I think that the fluidity of Staton's artwork ties it all together. I also loved the Hostess parody advertisements and the occasional Mike Mauser backup stories in the First series.

What do you see that's out of place? Dark Phoenix wannabee?
If you only knew that the female character on the cover was actually an exotic dancer named "Nova Caine", you'd probably already have an idea that the title often involved parody and satire.
However, I see your point... for the uninitiated, it could possibly be interpreted as a rip-off story. This story was published during '80s X-mania, when it seemed that everyone was doing an X-parody at some point.

"Man-Mountain" looks suspiciously familiar as well...

Haven't posted here in a while. Here are some recent pickups from various sources-- local shops, ebay, etc. Of course, it's my usual eclectic mix of weirdness.
Notice the EC "Vault Keeper" swipe on the cover of Strange Suspense Stories #71-- courtesy of Dick Giordano
The Spider-Man issue is a fairly hard-to-find giveaway issue, which was a premium from ALL brand laundry detergent... go figure.
Also picked up another issue of Unexpected... now needing 9 issues to complete the run.
And last, a really nice copy of DC Super Giant #21, that I got for a song, as well as an extra copy of Jonah Hex #1 (already have one copy) that I just couldn't pass up for $5.00
Great pickup on the Love 1971! Also, Young Love #125 is a great book to have. I think it's the only Walt Simonson romance cover.

I still like the small East Coast Comiccons at 3.00 admission. Better deals over all.

Our hometown show, Champion City Comic Con was today, but because Sunday is D&D day and we hardly played in October due to schedule conflicts, I only went to the show for about an hour before we played today. I only picked up a handful of books from the show itself, but I also picked up two lots of stuff, one from Jesse (who organizes this show and Gem City) of the stuff I had gotten from him through his FB group, and another from Scott's Stash, a vendor active in that group who is local. Easier (and cheaper) to pick up books from them when I see them than to ship them. We didn't win Power Ball last night, so an Avengers 4 was not on my radar today, but I did get some cool stuff... I'll break this into 3 posts-books from the show, books from Jesse, and books from Scott. I only got 6 back issues and 2 novels form the show itself, but the first two were pretty good gets for me... Fast Willie Jackson #1 Four Color #367 Donald Duck in "A Christmas for Shacktown" by Carl Barks I got the pair for $40 from a dealer I know, they were extras from his personal collection and he wanted them to go to a good home so I got a really good price on them (his ask for the Fast Willie alone if it was going to be a wall book if I didn't take it was $140). I also gifted him 4 unopened Marvel Posters featuring Milo Manara's rendition of Shanna, Gamora, Wasp and Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers) that I have had sitting around forever as he is a big Manara fan. At the table run by Jesse's business partner on these shows, I picked up 4 books, 2 comic and 2 novels. All Bronze Age books form a collection he had just bought were $5 and the novels were $5 a pop each, so I dropped $20 for these 4 lovelies... This has me down to needing 7 issues from this Ghost Rider run, though I doubt #1 or #2 will fall into the range of my budget. and the last 2 books were 2 off my want list to recreate my childhood collection, I got these from Scott's table at the show, both for $5 the only other purchase I made was from a vendor who had some pre-painted D&D minis singles, and I got some monsters. Next post the Jesse books... -M

Ok so this lot of books from Jesse were mostly in the $1-$3 range (1 book was more than that but I honestly can't remmeber which). The two sets were cheap-Mystech Wars a buck for the complete mini and The Land That Time Forget was $2 for all 12 issues. A couple more Batmans off the list... A couple of DD issues, 1 from the Miller run, and #206 features a story by Harlan Ellison and art by David Mazzuchelli. a slate of misc. DC's (the B&B w/Rock is a beater until I can find a better copy, but again $1... 5 FF issues from right around the end of the Kirby era and start of the post-Kirby era... a couple of Heroes Return first issues... some misc. Marvels I got the Liefeld New Mutants #100 just so Icctrombone doesn't feel on an island with Liefeld books, but I do have NM #1 so it made a bookend pair). and those sets... and that was the haul from Jesse. One more batch to go... -M

And the last batch came from Scott's Stash, and again most were in the $1-$3 range. a miscellany of indy and DC books, including one more Kubert cover off the list... speaking of Kubert, a couple more off the list... a miscellany of stuff, the Darkhold 7 is a red dress cover as well and a trio of Gold Key Tarzans and that's it. I didn't have a lot of time (or money) to spend at the show, so it was a quick stop and a small haul, but I got some fin books checked off my want lists and got to see and chat with some of my con kith and kin. -M

Just arrived a few minutes ago-- not technically "classic comics", but essentially "classic comics adjacent".
I pre-ordered this a few months back, and have been patiently waiting ever since. Can't wait to start reading it tonight-- 272 pages of Charlton weirdness, color interiors. And who doesn't love a good Joe Staton cover?
