Just arrived a few minutes ago-- not technically "classic comics", but essentially "classic comics adjacent".
I pre-ordered this a few months back, and have been patiently waiting ever since. Can't wait to start reading it tonight-- 272 pages of Charlton weirdness, color interiors. And who doesn't love a good Joe Staton cover?
Is there significant stuff in this that wasn't in the two Charlton issues of Comic Book Artist?

Went to the LA Comic Art Show today. Did I purchase anything? NOPE! But it was awesome seeing so many brilliant original pages up close. I collect comic art but I'm not even close to these. The show host brought in modern artists Frank Cho and David Mack so sell their own works as well. I settled for a few signed comics but a great time seeing this artwork. Rob Liefeld popped in, made a purchase of a Byrne page and left. Some serious big buyers and players at this small show. Thought I'd shared some of the artwork there. Kirby. Wood. Buscema. Eisner. You name them, I'm almost positive someone had a piece. I'm surprised they let you take a picture.

Is there significant stuff in this that wasn't in the two Charlton issues of Comic Book Artist? Yes. Cooke has expanded the information substantially since his CBA articles were first published over 20 years ago. The publishing date on this book is September 2022, and clocking in at 272 pages, it ain't just filler pictures.
Obviously, since it just arrived this morning, I haven't begun to read it yet, but thumbing through it, it looks pretty dense text-wise.

That's cool. I'll probably get it eventually. I was just wondering how much overlap there is with those two magazines.

I've never heard of that Charlton series, Mysterious Traveler, are they reprints?

The book carries a hefty $43.95 sticker, but the digital version is $15.99. Since Twomorrows has a habit of selling out a lot of first printings on their books (I waited over 2 years for them to reprint the Reed Crandall book), I didn't want to wait on this one.

Yes, and no. The original series dates back to 1956, and is loosely tied to the radio series which ran from the early '40s through early '50s. In classic Charlton fashion, they resurrected the series in the mid '80's for a couple of issues right before they ceased publication of their comics line. That particular issue is from October, 1985, and contains two re-printed stories plus a third new story.
The only other issue I currently own is the final issue from the original run, dated June, 1959.

I did it when no one was looking lol I HAD to share with all of you!

Is there significant stuff in this that wasn't in the two Charlton issues of Comic Book Artist? That was my question exactly! Those two issues are awesome, and quite thorough. Looking forward to this, though.

Went to our local (in town) toy store Roma Collectibles after talking to the owner Aaron at Champion City this past weekend. He was interested in some mostly modern stuff I was looking at parting ways with, so I brought it down and we worked out a cash/trade deal. For the trade part I picked up a handful of back issues from his small comics section, mostly Miller/Mazzuchelli DD issues, and 2 other random Marvels that were priced right. -M

Made another run to trade/sell some stuff today, this time to Bell, Book & Comics over near Dayton to trade some Illuminati CCG and other gaming stuff that was leftover inventory. Mrs. MRP likes this shop because they sell D&D and Pathfinder mins as singles, so she spent an hour or so browsing minis to purchase and came back with about 50 new minis for our gaming pool as part of the trade credit we got. I stocked up on supplies and did a little bargain bin diving. There are 3 bargain bin price point there- 3/$1 books, 50 cent books and $1 books. I got a handful of each. For the 3/$1 stuff, they had a bunch of the Adventurers 80s b&w D&D inspired comics and some spinoff series from that line that I've been hunting at cons over the last couple of years and so I knocked a bunch of those off my want list... I also got a couple of Marvel and DC books out of the 3/$1 bins... in the 50 cent boxes, I found a bunch of DC war books... and the last issue I needed of Ditko's Shade the Changing Man to complete my run of that short series... out of the dollar bins, I picked up 5 books, 3 issues of Marvel's Star Wars (5, 6, 9) that I had as a kid these were the plain UPC box Whitman books form the polybagged 3 packs, which is how I got a lot of the Star Wars comics I had as a kid and then a couple of $1 Marvels featuring Kirby work form the 70s-the infamous Iron Man nose cover by Kirby and an issue of Kirby's run on Cap form that time... nothing major, but fun stuff from the bargain bins in exchange for stuff I didn't want anymore. And Mrs. MRP got a ton of new D&D minis to boot. -M

Iron Man #80 was my first issue of Iron Man! I missed a few issues here and there because of bad distribution but otherwise I bought it regularly until about 1985 or so.
The nose has never looked weird to me!
