That's also the option I chose, (1991 (Claremont fired, Image formed), but we were outvoted. BTW, I didn't like the options given. Too many close to present day, very few older ones. Maybe a new poll?

A 1959 comic in 1991 was what a 1991 comic is today. I can't imagine anybody in 1991 saying, wow, these 1960 comics are too modern to be called classic.
The 90's are ancient history at this point, and the 2000's are getting a bit distant as well (the start was 23, going on 24, years ago!). Personally I think 10, maybe 15 years at most, reasonably lands you in "classic" territory because comics tend to change enough by then. The MCU started 15 years ago and the changes that created ultimately for the comic books themselves makes the comics before that look pretty different to me.

Also, if you pick a fixed time line (Like, say, 1991), than eventually we'll run out of stuff . One could argue 15 or even 20 years ago instead of 10, but I fixed point seems bad. Just like in music.. when I was a kid 'classic rock' meant the 60s.. which was 20-30 years old. Is Linkin Park classic rock? By that definition it would be, but I still think of 'classic rock' as the 60s and 70s. Thus now we have that and we have 'cassette era classic rock' which covers the 80s and 90s (even though casettes didn't really make it to the 90s). what will the future bring? who knows?

I wonder if people still feel that way. Most voted for 10 years, but that was 10 years ago, maybe they don't think that comics just published back then, are already classics. In any case, a transparent attempt to bump up that old thread. It's subjective , I guess. To me , it's 1989 or less. That's because you're old. 1989 was 34 years ago. In 1989 a 34 year old comic was from 1955. So Showcase #4 and Fantastic Four #1 were still "new" comics? I don't think so. I'm not just singling you out. Old people just get myopia about the times they lived through.

I posted 'Death' in the 12 Days of Classic Comics thread, and had the embarrassing discovery that I didn't own this delightful appearance of hers in Action Comics 894 back in 2010, so I nipped it in the bud last night....there's some beeyotching as to whether or not it's her first appearance in DC continuity but nonetheless, I like her and will support any book she appears in. Even if Liefeld draws her.

This will most likely be my last purchase before Christmas, simply because I got a great offer.
Who needs to spend $5.99 on one lousy new issue of Batman when you can get a 448 page Deluxe Hardcover collection of Joker's stories spanning 80 years for about $8.00 + economy shipping?
This includes
Batman #1: "Batman vs. the Joker"; "The Joker Returns" Detective Comics #168: "The Man Behind the Red Hood!" Batman #159: "The Great Clayface-Joker Feud" Batman #251 Detective Comics #475 Detective Comics #476 Batman #321 Batman: The Killing Joke (Ten-page excerpt) Batman #429 Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #50: "Images" The Batman Adventures: Mad Love Batman #614 Gotham Central #15 Detective Comics #826 Detective Comics (Volume 2) #1: "Faces of Death" Batman (Volume 2) #17
I love anything with "The Laughing Fish." If it's in braille I'd probably get it...lol

This was a full twenty years before that Action Comics issue, when the Sandman comic itself had only been going for about a year and a half. Of course, Neil Gaiman wasn't too happy about it. Also appeared at least twice in 1992. Once here, for one page. And a few months before that, Death appeared in the Ambush Bug Nothing Special for a page or two. Of course it's Ambush Bug so one can argue, uh, Endlessly about whether it is in proper DC continuity or not. Either way, I guess Keith Giffen liked her since he wrote both of those two.

"Classic" by definition though isn't about age so much as it is about quality. The dawn of The Silver Age would surely deserve being defined as classic by 1991, whereas I'm not so sure that the dawn of Image or foil covers is as worthy of such a designation today. "Old"? Sure; "classic" ehhh, maybe not.

Thanks, had no idea about those two. I think the Action appearance is her first appearance on a cover in DC continuity, and she's in the story as well.

I bought the series because of the Erik Larsen art, I'm not sure I have motivation to get the follow up series.
